In einem langen Kapitel seiner Regel beleuchtet Benedikt von Nursia das Verhaltnis von Arbeit (labor) und geistlicher Lesung (lectio divina) (Kap. 48). Demnach gehort zur Grundung eines Klosters nach der Regel Benedikts als wesentlicher Bestandteil eine Bibliothek. Sie stellt die liturgischen Bucher bereit und dient der geistlichen Erbauung der Gemeinschaft und des einzelnen. Wenn sich in der Benediktinerinnenabtei St. Walburg ein Bucherschatz uber Jahrhunderte erhalten hat, so ist dies primar der Ehrfurcht vor den geschaffenen Dingen im allgemeinen und vor dem Buch im besonderen zu verdanken sowie der Sparsamkeit, die vom Armutsideal nahegelegt wird. Inhaltlich wird die monastische Lesekultur von vielfaltigen geistigen Einflussen und Bedurfnissen bestimmt.Im Jahre 1987 vereinbarten die Abtei St. Walburg und die Uni-versitatsbibliothek Eichstatt, die historischen Buchbestande dieser Bibliothek, die die Sakularisation schadlos uberstanden hat - rund 5.000 Bande aus dem 16.-19. Jahrhundert - zu bearbeiten und damit einer breiten Offentlichkeit zuganglich zu machen. Ein Ergebnis ist der vorliegende Katalog mit Beitragen von M. Mechtildis Denz OSB, der Bibliothekarin der Abtei, und Dr. Matthias Buschkuhl (1997), zuletzt Direktor der Erzbischoflichen Diozesan-bibliothek Hamburg.
