From epidemics in the 17th century and the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 to Guernica in World War II, the essays in this volume trace the development of the catastrophic imagination, relying heavily on pictorial media and different forms of staging. Catastrophe in its modern sense seems to be inextricably linked to its spectacular representation, be it on the stage, on screen or in popular amusement parks. But the modern relationship between catastrophe and spectacle is also increasingly confronting us with the unimaginable side of catastrophe, particularly with regard to the Holocaust and in more recent times to the daily experience of refugees. The essays in this volume elucidate images of the catastrophes that have inspired them by providing a textual commentary that makes it possible to reconsider how the spectacular and the catastrophic are interrelated. Thus, the essays not only deal with the emergence of the modern spectacular imagination of catastrophe in terms of the history of both discourse and media, they also present themselves as a critique of catastrophe, one based on close readings of the scenes and images in question.

In den 1960er Jahren intensivierte der Schriftsteller Italo Calvino seine ästhetischen Bemühungen, „die Landkarte des labyrinthischen Gefängnisses zu umreißen, in dem sich der Mensch des 20. Jahrhunderts bewegt." Es ging ihm darum, mithilfe seiner Poetik biopolitische Dispositive der Welt zu entwirren. Dabei stellt die Erzählung La giornata d’uno Scrutatore die epistemologische Schwelle dar, an der Calvino auf die Widerstandskraft des Lebendigen stößt. Auf Basis dieses neuen Lebensbegriffs entwarf er eine Vielzahl poetologischer Verfahren, um die Lebendigkeit der komplexen Welt ästhetisch aufzubereiten, und eröffnete damit gezielt ethische Diskurse. Durch die bio-poetische Annäherung schlägt Calvino ein neues literarisches Modell vor, das vielfache Anschlussmöglichkeiten für aktuelle Diskurse bietet. Mit dem Fokus auf die poetische Kategorie des „Lebendigen" und das Foucault‘sche Konzept der „Bio-Macht" vollzieht der Band eine Neubewertung des Werkes und auch der Rolle Italo Calvinos als „Kartograph der Dispositive".

This book draws an updated Euro-American conceptual map, starting from a limited number of strategic terms whose meanings today are judged univocal and permanent, while in fact daily use has turned them into “common sense”, depriving them of their ambiguity – an original feature of language, particularly relevant when it comes to literary use. By re-examining the proper noun for each of the selected notions, the contributors’ common intent is to shed light on their polysemous nature and linguistic fluidity, in spite of the common tendency towards simplification and homogeneity imposed by hegemonic cultural paradigms. Along this line, the book explores the great divides between identity and otherness (or common or alien) in order to recover a sense of cultural identity which is at once polymorphous and polyphonic.

Die Korrespondenz zwischen körperlichen Merkmalen und dem Charakter eines Menschen, die im 19. Jahrhundert die Matrix für die Naturwissenschaften fungierte, stellt heute die Basis von Lifestyle-Normen oder auch von psychologischer und medizinischer Diagnostik dar. Infolge strukturalistisch-semiotischer Methoden gilt die Physiognomik immer noch als Deutungsdispositiv bei Formen literarischer Personendarstellungen oder philosophischer Deutung menschlichen Antlitzes. In den durch umfangreiche mediale und technische Umwälzungen hervorgebrachten Modellierungen der Sinnlichkeit erweist sich die Physiognomik auch als Paradigma des Enhancements. Der Band untersucht historisch und systematisch die biopolitische Performativität physiognomischer Praktiken der Selbst- und Fremddeutung, ihre Gestaltung sowie ihre Transformationen durch neue Technologien.
