Recherchieren ist heute zur universellen Metapher für den digitalen Alltag geworden: 'Ich suche – also bin ich.' In Zeiten des 'Information Overload' ist die Aufgabe allerdings nicht mehr so sehr, jede nur erdenkliche Information zu erlangen. Im Gegenteil drohen selbst die professionellen Schleusenwärter des Informationsgewerbes, also die Journalisten, in der Datenflut zu ertrinken: Wer suchet, der findet noch lange nicht. Recherchieren bedeutet darum heute, nur noch so viele Daten zu sammeln, wie für eine gute journalistische Geschichte nötig sind. Das ist der Ansatz der storybasierten Recherchemethode, der in diesem Buch vorgestellt wird. Neben die Informationssuche treten deren sinnvolle Auswahl, Eingrenzung und Filterung. Der richtige Einsatz von Suchmaschinen und datenjournalistische Verfahren spielen dabei eine ebenso große Rolle wie Recherchen in Social Media und im Deep Web, also dem Teil des Internets, der von Suchmaschinen gar nicht erschlossen wird. Strategien der Recherche im Internet haben heute zwar an Bedeutung erheblich zugenommen, für eine gute Story sind aber nach wie vor althergebrachte Recherchemethoden wichtiger: Von einfachen Telefonbefragungen bis zu verdeckten Recherchen im Stile Günter Wallraffs, von Quellenkunde bis zur Frage nach der Organisation von Daten und Informationen in Rechercheprotokollen, Mindmaps und Masterplänen sind analoge Verfahren entscheidend für die Kunst der Recherche. Einblicke in die juristischen Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Recherchejournalismus und Ausblicke in den Bereich journalistischer Ethik runden das Buch ab.

What is autobiography and how does it transform in the age of technological reproducibility? Katja Haustein discusses this question as it relates to photography and the role of emotion in Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time (1909-22), Walter Benjamin's Berlin Childhood around 1900 (1932-38), and Roland Barthes's Roland Barthes (1977) and Camera Lucida (1980). In her close critical readings, Haustein provides the first comprehensive comparative analysis of these popular works, mapping them against little-studied textual, visual and aural material, some of which has only recently become accessible. In this way, her book opens new avenues in scholarship dedicated to three outstanding twentieth-century writers and contributes to a field of critical inquiry that is still in the making: the history of autobiography in the light of a history of the gaze.

With the help of the US Army’s Monuments Men—the name given to a hand-picked group of art historians and museum professionals commissioned for this important duty—massive numbers of objects were retrieved from their wartime hiding places and inventoried for repatriation. Iris Lauterbach’s fascinating history documents the story of the Allies’ Central Collecting Point (CCP), set up in the former Nazi Party headquarters at Königsplatz in Munich, where the confiscated works were transported to be identified and sorted for restitution. Der Autor stellt die Sammlung vor, beleuchtet Hintergründe und Ausrichtung des Kults und belegt, dass Stein in Afrika häufiger zur Herstellung sakraler Objekte verwendet wurde als bislang angenommen.
