Einerseits sprechen Kunst, Musik, Literatur, Dichtung und alle anderen Ausdrucksformen von Geschichte. Andererseits ist aber Geschichtsschreibung eine Art von Kunst mit ihrer Subjektivität: die Sprache in allen Formen hat eine grundlegende Rolle in der Wahrnehmung der Ereignisse. Findet der Mensch eine Antwort, sofern es je eine gibt, vielleicht nur – in sich selbst? In der Art und Weise, wie er erkennt?... Glauben wir etwa, die historische Wirklichkeit sei fest wie ein Steinbruch, man müsse sich nur der Teile sicher sein? Sollte der Notausgang aus dem Dilemma dort zu finden sein, wogegen sich Historiker zu allen Zeiten so lebhaft gewehrt haben: dass die Geschichtsschreibung eine Kunst sei? Eine poetische und philologische Forschung der Geschichtsschreibung und der Kenntnisse der Menschheit. Karlheinz Schneider-Janessen, am 9. November 1945 in Rotenfels, Kreis Rastatt, geboren und in Karlsruhe aufgewachsen. Neben den beiden Regelstudiengängen Philosophie und Medizin, jeweils mit Promotion abgeschlossen, hat er als drittes Studium Psychologie absolviert und mit Diplom beendet. Er studierte in Heidelberg, Hamburg und Wien und belegte außerdem – dem Ideal des uomo universale verpflichtet – über mehrere Semester Seminare in den Fächern Geschichte, Linguistik, Kunstgeschichte und Kosmologie. Seine Hinwendung zu Malerei und Musik vertiefte er durch sein Interesse an kreativen Prozessen. Seine literarischen Werke sind geprägt von der Analyse des Sogewordenseins von Individuen und Gesellschaften in spezifischen Kontexten und im Kontinuum der Geschichte.

Images of the body in ancient Near Eastern civilizations are radically different from body images today, which in turn creates significant consequences for our understanding of the biblical notion of God's human shape and the frequent and widespread misconceptions therein. Andreas Wagner illuminates such frequent and widespread misconceptions, and reveals the sometimes distant pictorial world of ancient body images. He contrasts these with contemporary models and makes the matter of the Old Testament concept of God's human form accessible and clear. Wagner begins by introducing readers to aspects of anthropomorphism, the study of body parts, and Israel's basic understanding of the human body. He then turns specifically to the body of God, analysing why and how certain body parts are emphasized or regularly employed in the biblical text when it tries to describe God. Wagner draws out the theological aspects of the ways in which God's body is described as well as considering the diverse range of ancient Near Eastern perspectives on God, and the ways in which ancient cultures constructed and understood deities. Wagner concludes by looking at how the depiction of God in the Old Testament fits with the concept of mankind made in God's image. Enhanced by over fifty illustrations, God's Body will lead the debate in biblical anthropomorphism for years to come.
