J ede bildnerische Form ist notwendig der Ausdruck der geistigen Kräfte, zugleich aber auch der physischen Be dingungen und des seelischen Lebens, die in ihrer Epoche schöpferisch waren. Sie ist nicht in demselben Grad wie die Sprache fähig, die subtilsten Gedanken auszudrücken. Aber indem sie sinnlich vergegenwärtigt und in dauernden Cc stalten verewigt, was als wertvoll und wesentlich den wechselnden Generationen erscheint, wird sie deren lebendiger Wirklichkeit greifbares, unwiderlegliches Zeugnis. Indem sie die höchsten Ideen des Göttlichen in Sinnbildern und ge steigerten Gestalten wirksam verkörpert, wird sie selber Instrument einer trans zendenten Erkenntnis und seelenformenden Glaubensschöpfung. Das Bild des Gottes wird zum Gott selbst im Herzen den Gläubigen und wandelt ihn wiederum nach seinem Bilde. Der schöpferische Mensch aber erschafft auch wieder den Gott nach seinem Bilde, nach dem inneren Bilde des Höchsten, das in ihm erschwingbar ist. In dieser Wechselbaiehung der Wirkungen steht jedes religiöse Kunstwerk. So suchen wir es zu deuten, indem wir es aus dem leiblichen, seelischen, geistigen Leben seiner Zeit erklären, aber zugleich wird es selber wieder eben dieses Leben uns sichtbar und faßbar machen, so un mittelbar und wirksam, wie kein anderes Zeugnis dies vermöchte. Die Ent wicklung der Kunst wird die Wandlungen des Lebens und der Ideen spiegeln. Wenn aber diese nicht zufällig sind, so wird auch sie ein inneres Gesetz nicht verleugnen. Little is known of Dutch author MARINUS WILLEM DE VISSER (1876-1930) beyond his academic life as a classicist with an interest in Chinese and Japanese language and culture, and as a popularizer of Japanese art in the Netherlands. He is best remembered today for having given us a cornerstone examination of the legends of fantastic flying reptiles known as dragons. The Dragon in China and Japan contains "the most interesting quotations concerning the dragon in China, systematically arranged, selected from the enormous number of passages on this fantastic animal in Chinese literature, from the remotest eras down to modern times," notes cryptozoologist Loren Coleman in his new introduction. Coleman also praises the book's use of primary source material. "If cryptozoologists are to study the Asian dragons of India, China, and Japan, it must not be done through the screen of today's New Age mentality. Scholarly, level-headed examinations of living, breathing reports of serpentine flying beasts, water-borne megafauna, and shadowy entities must be balanced with investigations of the legends and folktales of these dragons from Asian texts," such as de Visser's here.
