Man kann Cassirer als Schöpfer eines eigenen epistemologischen Ansatzes verstehen, der nicht nur bisher ungelöste Probleme der Erkenntnistheorie zu klären vermag, sondern der es ebenso erlaubt, die immer noch umstrittenen Befunde der Relativitätstheorie und Quantentheorie in neuem Licht zu sehen und ihrer vermeintlichen Widersprüchlichkeit zu entkleiden. Schmitz-Rigals grandiose Studie über Cassirers offen-genetisches und holistisches Erkenntnismodell schlägt zugleich eine Brücke zwischen den Disziplinen und untersucht die Leistungsfähigkeit dieses Modells für die Deutung der modernen Physik. Man kann Cassirer als Schöpfer eines eigenen epistemologischen Ansatzes verstehen, der nicht nur bisher ungelöste Probleme der Erkenntnistheorie zu klären vermag, sondern der es ebenso erlaubt, die immer noch umstrittenen Befunde der Relativitätstheorie und Quantentheorie in neuem Licht zu sehen und ihrer vermeintlichen Widersprüchlichkeit zu entkleiden. Es wird also versucht, im Gefolge Cassirers eine Brücke zwischen den Disziplinen zu schlagen und dank einer Studie zur Epistemologie eine erhellende Deutung der modernen Physik zu leisten. Cassirer stellt sich der zentralen Frage, wie das Wissen konstitutiv offen und vergänglich sein kann, ohne deswegen seine Erklärungskraft und seinen Wahrheitsanspruch einbüßen zu müssen. Er antwortet auf die Herausforderung zeitlicher Kontingenz mit einem offen-genetischen, holistischen Erkenntnismodell. In ihm werden alle Wissenskomponenten, auch die apriorischen Grundlagen, auf eine ihnen zugrundeliegende Dynamik zurückgeführt und als Produkte eines beständigen, rückgekoppelten Gestaltungsprozesses erklärt, der auf das vitale Problem der Orientierung kreativ mit der Bildung symbolischer Ordnungen reagiert, dessen tatsächliche Erkenntnisleistung sich aber nur in der pragmatischen Erprobung und Erfüllung seiner Funktion zeigen kann. Damit wird die strukturierende Sinngenese als transzendentale Bedingung jeglicher Objektivierung sichtbar. Im ersten Teil des Buches wird dieser Ansatz durch den Bezug auf Kant, Leibniz und die Kunst entwickelt und motiviert. Im zweiten Teil wird das Cassirersche Modell im Detail diskutiert und seine innovative Konzeption von Konstitution und Legitimation des Wissens vorgestellt, die es ermöglicht, das klassische Form-Inhalt-Modell und mit ihm die Schwächen des erkenntnistheoretischen Dualismus zu überwinden. Im dritten Teil wird, ganz im Cassirerschen Sinne, die konkrete Leistungsfähigkeit dieser Sichtweise an der Erschließung der Naturwissenschaft 'Physik' erprobt. Indem die Möglichkeitsbedingungen ihres spezifischen Objektivierungverfahrens sichtbar werden, kann ein neuer Lösungsvorschlag für die Deutungsprobleme von Relativitätstheorie und Quantentheorie gegeben werden. Im vierten Teil findet zur doppelten Erprobung und indirekten Bestätigung der Cassirerschen Analyse nochmals ein kritischer Vergleich zu den wichtigsten Interpretationsversuchen der Physiker selbst statt.

Ernst Cassirer’s philosophy of culture has been much discussed in recent years. However, it remains unclear how it evolved from his older theory of knowledge. This study deals with this question on the basis of Cassirer’s ‘disposition’ of a ‘philosophy of the symbolic’, reconstructed here for the first time. This text shows that the ‘symbolic’ refers to culture as a whole and to its inherent diversity. Therefore, ‘the symbolic’ includes the relationship between the general transcendental conditions of culture and its empirical specificities in language and languages, art and the arts, myth and myths, science and disciplines. Cassirer does not comprehend this empirical and specific reality of symbolization depending on pre-existing transcendental conditions. Instead, he proceeds from the empirical diversity of the symbolisations and reflects on their simultaneously general and specific conditions. Thus, Cassirer embarks on a path that he finds paved in Kant’s "Critique of Judgement": He consequently defines ‘the symbolic’ as the horizon for a reflective approach based on empirical findings – and not as the foundation of a systematic derivation of the diversity of culture in the style of the idealistic tradition.

Can we prove the necessity of our best physical theories by rational means, without appeal to experience? This book recounts a few ingenious attempts to derive physical theories by reason only, beginning with Descartes' geometric construction of the world, and finishing with recent derivations of quantum mechanics from natural axioms. Deductions based on theological, metaphysical, or transcendental arguments are worth remembering for the ways they motivated and structured physical theory, even though we would now criticize their excessive confidence in the power of the mind. Other deductions more modestly relied on criteria for the comprehensibility of nature, including forms of measurability, causality, homogeneity, and correspondence. The central thesis of this book is that such criteria, when properly applied to idealized systems, effectively determine some of our most important theories as well as the mathematical character of the laws of physics. The relevant arguments are not purely rational, because only experience can tell us to which extent nature is comprehensible in a given way. Nor do they block the possibility of ever more varied forms of comprehensibility. They nonetheless suggest the inevitability of much of our theoretical physics.
