1840 wurde in der Kapelle des Palazzo Bargello in Florenz ein Porträt von Dante Alighieri (1265 1321) entdeckt, von welchem bereits in Quellentexten des frühen 14. Jahrhunderts bis hin zu Vasari Überlieferungen zu finden sind. Die künstlerische Ausführung wurde darin traditionell Giotto (1266 1337) zugeschrieben und das Bildnis galt lange Zeit als die älteste Darstellung des italienischen Dichters, deren Besonderheit darin besteht, dass sie seit dem 14. Jahrhundert eine Vorstellung von Dante als "alma sdegnosa" prägt, die bis in die Gegenwart tradiert wird. Das Fresko wurde jedoch schon bald nach der Entdeckung durch eine unsachgemäße Restaurierung stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen, willkürliche übermalt und damit verfälscht. Die vorliegende Publikation begibt sich auf die Suche nach dem ursprünglichen Abbild Dantes vor der Übermalung, erläutert die Kunstvorstellungen Dantes' und Giottos' und erhellt die Entstehung eines neuen Porträttypus, der sich an diesem frühen Fresko ablesen lässt: Dem Dichter- und Gelehrtenporträt.

Praz explains that within literature, each epoch has “its peculiar handwriting or handwritings, which, if one could interpret them, would reveal a character, even a physical appearance,” and while these characteristics belong to the general style of a given period, the personality of the writer does not fail to pierce through. Praz contends that something similar occurs in art.
