Ein Volkspolizist und ein evangelischer Vikar müssen, todkrank und mit völlig verschiedener Weltanschauung, über mehrere Monate ein Zimmer in einem Tbc-Heim teilen. Humorvoll und mit großer Dramatik schildert Wolfgang Held, wie beide schließlich zu gegenseitiger Achtung und Toleranz finden. Als der später auf der Berlinale ausgezeichnete Film „Einer trage des anderen Last" Anfang 1988 in die Kinos kam, fand er in der DDR ein Millionenpublikum. Er wurde in Ost und West als ein „Plädoyer für Toleranz" verstanden. Nach seinem Drehbuch hat Wolfgang Held 1995 den gleichnamigen Roman geschrieben.
