Diese Arbeit möchte einen neuen Zugang zum Lyrischen Werk Bertolt Brechts (1898-1956) erschließen. Brechts Gedichte werden als Dialog des Individuums mit den zerstörerischen Kräften seiner Zeit gesehen. Dabei versteht sich Brecht als Dichter im Sinne der Horazschen Weisung: «delectare aut prodesse volunt poetas». Dies läßt Brecht ein neues Selbstverständnis als Dichter finden. Er sieht sich in der Gestalt des Odysseus, der mit Hilfe der Muse gegen die zerstörerische Macht der Gottheit Poseidon gewinnt. So wird Brechts Lyrik zu einem Eintreten für die Unbedingtheit des individuellen Lebens.

This volume presents a cross-section of current Brecht studies, reflecting a variety of approaches and perspectives ranging from detailed exegesis of particular texts to cultural criticism in the broadest sense.
