This book proposes that there is no better, no more complex way to access a community, a society, an era and its cultures than through literature. For millennia, literature from a wide variety of geocultural areas has gathered knowledge about life, about survival, and about living together, without either falling into discursive or disciplinary specializations or functioning as a regulatory mechanism for cultural knowledge. Literature is able to offer its readers knowledge through direct participation in the form of step-by-step intellectual and affective experiences. Through this ability, it can reach and affect audiences across great spatial and temporal distances. Literature – what different times and cultures have been able to understand as such in a broad sense – has always been characterized by its transareal and transcultural origins and effects. It is the product of many logics, and it teaches us to think polylogically rather than monologically. Literature is an experiment in living, and living in a state of experimentation. About the author Ottmar Ette has been Chair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 1995. He is Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) (elected in 2014), member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (elected in 2013), and regular member of the Academia Europaea (since 2010).

Peaceful and non-peaceful applications of nuclear technologies share a common fate: one cannot exist without the other. As the world is about to experience a nuclear renaissance, the nuclear industry has gone through a phase of consolidation. Despite more efficient intra-industry structures and technological advancements it will still not be able to close the increasing gap in energy demand to be expected in the near future. The economic attractiveness and relative absence of emissions still make atomic power an attractive candidate for an energy mix comprising several different "clean" technologies. A renewed interest in nuclear energy will at the same time demand for a robust non-proliferation framework as a safety-guarantee for the market. Export controls have been found to be an effective tool in this regard. The Zangger Committee as the legitimate interpreter of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Nuclear Suppliers Group representing the most influential countries in nuclear commerce have established a system of checks and balances that may not halt proliferation altogether, but which has managed to slow it down significantly. The effect of these control structures on the development of the nuclear market cannot be assessed directly. Political and security concerns particularly attributed to nuclear matters make their application a necessity for the existence of the commerce itself. Recent global efforts such as the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1540 and 1673 are focusing on the implementation of common set of key elements for strategic trade controls. The success of these measures will have a direct impact on the sustainability of the nuclear renaissance.

Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Der Bildungstourist Goethe bereiste im Jahre 1787 Italien mit der Postkutsche und stellte fest: „Italien ohne Sizilien macht gar kein Bild in der Seele. Hier ist erst der Schlüssel zu allem.“ Der deutsche Schriftsteller Johann Gottfried Seume unternahm zwei Jahrzehnte später von Leipzig aus einen Spaziergang nach Syrakus in Sizilien und entdeckte den „bestialischen Makkaronenfraߓ des gemeinen Sizilianers. Aber welches Bild weckt Sizilien? Selbst wer noch nie in Sizilien, diesem oft vergessenen Anhängsel von Italien, gewesen ist, hat bestimmte Vorstellungen von der Insel – nicht zuletzt durch die vielen Filme, die in und über Sizilien entstehen. Angefangen bei den Klassikern wie Stromboli über Giuseppe Tornatores Nuovo Cinema Paradiso bis hin zu der Serie Allein gegen die Mafia kam Sizilien in jedes Wohnzimmer, oft voller Klischees und Stereotypen: rauchende Schrotflinten und die Mafia, wüstenähnliche Landstriche, archaischer Ehrbegriff, dornige Kaktusfeigen. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich untersuchen, wie Sizilien im Film dargestellt wird. Um den Umfang dieser Arbeit nicht zu sprengen und die einzelnen Filme ausreichend analysieren zu können, möchte ich mich auf drei Regisseure beschränken: Luchino Visconti, Francesco Rosi und Pietro Germi. Die sechs von mir ausgewählten Filme sind in den Jahren von 1948 bis 1976 entstanden, so dass aufgrund des zeitlichen Spektrums auch darauf eingegangen werden kann, ob eine Entwicklung in der filmischen Darstellung stattgefunden hat. Zunächst möchte ich kurz die Vorgehensweise für diese Arbeit und die Kriterien, nach denen ich die Filme der drei Regisseure ausgewählt habe, erläutern. Folgende Filme habe ich für die Untersuchung ausgewählt: 1. La terra trema (1948) dt. Titel: Die Erde bebt von Luchino Visconti. 2. Il Gattopardo (1962) dt.
