This is a study of the life and culture of a small group of Moroccan Germans and how they attempted to exert political influence. At the end of the 19th century some 40 German merchants and diplomats were living with their families in Morocco. Around the turn of the century these Moroccan Germans attempted to gain influence on the inner workings of Morocco and on the German government to prevent Morocco from coming under a French protectorate. Their goal was to have part of the country be declared a German colony. This study also illuminates the struggle of the Moroccan Germans to receive compensation for confiscations they suffered in the aftermath of 1918 and the many difficulties they experienced trying to gain footing during the German Reich.

The German lacuna in Edward Said’s 'Orientalism' has produced varied studies of German cultural and academic Orientalisms. So far the domains of German politics and scholarship have not been conflated to probe the central power/knowledge nexus of Said’s argument. Seeking to fill this gap, the diplomatic career and scholarly-literary productions of the centrally placed Friedrich Rosen serve as a focal point to investigate how politics influenced knowledge generated about the “Orient” and charts the roles knowledge played in political decision-making regarding extra-European regions. This is pursued through analyses of Germans in British imperialist contexts, cultures of lowly diplomatic encounters in Middle Eastern cities, Persian poetry in translation, prestigious Orientalist congresses in northern climes, leveraging knowledge in high-stakes diplomatic encounters, and the making of Germany’s Islam policy up to the Great War. Politics drew on bodies of knowledge and could promote or hinder scholarship. Yet, scholars never systemically followed empire in its tracks but sought their own paths to cognition. On their own terms or influenced by “Oriental” savants they aligned with politics or challenged claims to conquest and rule.

Emphasis is laid on the connected histories of different regions and populations across the globe regarding consumption patterns, government policies, economics and representations of alcohol and drinking. This book is the first major study of civilian internment during the First World War as both a European and global phenomenon. Based on research spanning twenty-eight archives in seven countries, this study explores the connections and continuities, as well as ruptures, between different internment systems at the local, national, regional and imperial levels. Arguing that the years 1914-20 mark the essential turning point in the transnational and international history of the detention camp, this book demonstrates that wartime civilian captivity was inextricably bound up with questions of power, world order and inequalities based on class, race and gender. It also contends that engagement with internees led to new forms of international activism and generated new types of transnational knowledge in the spheres of medicine, law, citizenship and neutrality. Finally, an epilogue explains how and why First World War internment is crucial to understanding the world we live in today.

Die marokkanische Stadt Tanger liegt an der Straße von Gibraltar, auf der Schwelle von Europa und Afrika, Orient und Okzident. Hier gründeten Diplomaten aus bis zu 13 verschiedenen Staaten ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts internationale Organisationen, die die Basis für eine von 1923 bis 1956 bestehende Sonderverwaltungszone bildeten. Die Internationalisierung der Stadt wird von der Autorin nicht nur in die Kolonialgeschichte Marokkos eingeordnet, sondern selbst als eine spezifische Form der kolonialen Herrschaft, als „geteilter Kolonialismus", konzeptualisiert. Diesen untersucht sie über einen Zeitraum von rund 100 Jahren und anhand stadtplanerischer Infrastrukturprojekte wie dem Bau von Kanalisation und Schlachthaus. Auf diese Weise wird am Beispiel der Stadt Tanger sichtbar, wie sich globale und lokale Entwicklungsprozesse gegenseitig bedingten und einen klar definierten Raum nachhaltig prägten. Erstmals konnte die Autorin für diese Studie weit verstreute Akten aus den Archiven internationaler Organisationen zusammentragen und mit dem Ansatz der transnationalen Geschichte auswerten. Daniela Hettstedt erhielt 2020 für ihre Studie den Dissertationspreis der "Gesellschaft für Stadtgeschichte und Urbanisierungsforschung".
