Die Staatsführung der DDR war 1949 angetreten, das bessere Deutschland zu schaffen, einen Staat, der friedfertig, gerecht und wohlhabend sein sollte. Von Anfang an lasteten auf dem ostdeutschen Teilstaat schwere Hypotheken. Länger als die Westmächte führte die Sowjetunion umfassende Demontagen von Industrieanlagen durch, die die industrielle Basis schwächten. Am 17. Juni 1953 entlud sich der Volkszorn über niedrige Löhne und schlechte Arbeitsbedingungen in einem Volksaufstand, der die ganze DDR erschütterte. Nur mit Hilfe sowjetischer Panzer konnte er niedergeschlagen werden. Die verschärfte Repression trieb immer mehr Menschen über die Berliner Sektorengrenze in den freien Westen. Am 13. August 1961 zog die Staatsführung der DDR die Notbremse. Von der KPdSU abgesegnet, riegelte sie die Sektorengrenzen zwischen der sowjetischen Zone und den drei Westzonen ab. Nach dem Bau der Mauer erlebte die DDR eine Phase relativer Ruhe und bescheidener Prosperität. Den Freiheitsdrang der Bürger konnte das SED-Regime zu keinem Zeitpunkt unterdrücken. Im Sommer 1989 kam es zu Protestaktionen der Bürgerbewegung und zur Massenflucht über Ungarn und die CSSR in den Westen. In der Nacht des 9. November 1989 wurde die Mauer geöffnet. Zehntausende Ost-Berliner strömten nach West-Berlin, wo sich die Freude in einer spontanen Wiedersehensfeier entlud. "Wahnsinn" war das Wort der Stunde. Dieses Buch schildert den Bau der Mauer, die Folgen, die das monströse Bauwerk für die Bürger in Ost und West hatte, und schließlich die Überwindung der Mauer durch die friedliche Revolution der Bürger in der DDR. Der Wille der Menschen, in Freiheit zu leben, hatte über ein politisches System gesiegt, das seine Bürger nur als Manövriermasse für eine menschenverachtende Ideologie betrachtete.
