Religious Women in Early Carolingian Francia, a groundbreaking study of the intellectual and monastic culture of the Main Valley during the eighth century, looks closely at a group of manuscripts associated with some of the best-known personalities of the European Middle Ages, including Boniface of Mainz and his “beloved,”abbess Leoba of Tauberbischofsheim. This is the first study of these “Anglo-Saxon missionaries to Germany” to delve into the details of their lives by studying the manuscripts that were produced in their scriptoria and used in their communities. The author explores how one group of religious women helped to shape the culture of medieval Europe through the texts they wrote and copied, as well as through their editorial interventions. Using compelling manuscript evidence, she argues that the content of the women’s books was overwhelmingly gender-egalitarian and frequently feminist (i.e., resistant to patriarchal ideas). Zwischen Rhein, Weser und Ysselmeer entstand im 3. Jahrhundert das Volk der Franken als ein Zusammenschluß germanischer Stämme. Im 5. Jahrhundert ließen sich große fränkische Verbände unter Königen aus dem Geschlecht oder der Verwandtschaft der Merowinger zwischen Rhein und Somme nieder. König Chlodwig, der Sohn Childerichs von Tournai, überwand den letzten gallo-römischen Oberbefehlshaber, beseitigte die übrigen fränkischen Stammeskönige und begründete damit das Fränkische Reich in Gallien. Durch die Unterwerfung der Alamannen, Thüringer, Bayern und Alpenromanen wurden dem Frankenreich weite nichtgallische Gebiete angegliedert. Im Zuge der zweiten Expansion entwickelte sich das Merowingerreich zu einem "Vielvölkerstaat": eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für die Entstehung des Abendlandes im Frühmittelalter. Die Königsländer in der Francia zwischen Rhein und Seine und in Nordburgund entfalteten sich im 7. Jahrhundert auch als religiös-kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Zentrallandschaften. Für das frühmittelalterliche Abendland entstand hier ein neuer Mittelpunkt. Anschaulich stellt der Autor die dynastischen Verhältnisse der Merowinger und ihre Bedeutung für die Entstehung und Konsolidierung des Frankenreiches dar.

The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.
