Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Mega-Mutation des Bewusstseins, bei der das seit der Steinzeit gültige Grundmuster mythischen Weltverstehens, aus dem die Religionen hervorgegangen sind, überholt und von einer völlig neuen, nunmehr empirisch fundierten Weltsicht abgelöst worden ist. Dieser Wandel ging dialektisch vor sich. Vorerst kam - als Zwischenstadium - das positivistisch-materialistische Weltbild der Aufklärung zu Stande, was zu dem rational nicht lösbaren "Dilemma zwischen Wissen und Glauben" führte. Dieses wurde dann im Verlauf des 20. Jh. - beim zweiten Schritt der Bewusstseins-Mutation - überstiegen. Daraus ergab sich eine Auffassung von Religiosität bzw. des Begriffspaares Materie und Geist, die mit dem heutigen Wissen über die Natur kompatibel ist. Mit diesem seinen letzten Buch schließt Willy Obrist sein epochales Werk ab. Er weist nach, dass und weshalb diese Evolution des Bewusstseins ihre geistigen Voraussetzungen und Wurzeln vor allem in Europa hat.
