...Das Ende der römischen Herrschaft bedeutet einen tiefen Einschnitt nicht nur in der Weltgeschichte, sondern auch in der Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaften. Jahrhundert, nach der Berührung des Abendlandes mit dem Orient, lebten die Wissenschaften in Italien und in West- und Mitteleuropa wieder auf. Aus dem Studium des von den Arabern bearbeiteten astronomischen Hauptwerks des Altertums erwächst die neuere Astronomie. Durch ihre Verbindung mit der Nautik werden die Entdeckungsreisen ermöglicht. Die Ausdehnung des geographischen Gesichtskreises über den ganzen Erdball und die Befreiung von den Formen des mittelalterlichen Denkens und Fühlens bedingen einen Einschnitt von gleicher Wichtigkeit wie ein Jahrtausend vorher der Untergang der alten Welt. Als ein anderer, ein neuer, tritt der Mensch an die Natur heran. Er lernt die Fesseln der Autorität abstreifen und die Augen öffnen. Infolgedessen entstehen die ersten Ansätze zur Neubegründung der beschreibenden und der experimentellen Naturwissenschaften. Wie auf dem astronomischen Gebiete, so bilden auch hier die nach dem Fall Konstantinopels in größerer Zahl nach Westeuropa gelangenden Schriften der Alten den Stütz- und Ausgangspunkt für die Bestrebungen der Neuzeit. Eine weitere Stütze erwächst der neueren Wissenschaft in der Erfindung des Buchdrucks, dem Emporblühen des Städtewesens und der Umwandlung der mittelalterlichen Feudalherrschaft in den geordneten Staat....
