Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Politik - Politisches System Deutschlands, Note: 1, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (FB 03 - Institut für Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Politische Ökonomie, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Walter Eucken wird häufig als herausragendes Mitglied und Begründer der neoliberalen Freiburger Schule in einem Atemzug mit Alfred Müller- Armack in Verbindung gebracht. Mancher Autor lässt sich sogar zu Aussagen wie „Kein Wissenschaftler hat die Wirtschaftsordnung der Nachkriegszeit in der Bundesrepublik so stark geprägt wie Eucken. Die von ihm begründete ordoliberale Freiburger Schule lieferte die Grundprinzipen für die soziale Marktwirtschaft.“ hinreißen. Und dennoch erfuhr Walter Eucken in der wissenschaftlichen Fachliteratur genauso wie in der konkreten Umsetzung einer Wirtschaftsordnung zumeist eine weitaus geringere Würdigung als der Begründer und Urheber des Begriffes „soziale Marktwirtschaft“, Alfred Müller-Armack, der – zusammen mit seiner Wortschöpfung - in der Folgezeit der jungen Bundesrepublik durch Ludwig Erhard noch zunehmend an Popularität gewonnen hat. Nach einem Referat und einer sich daran anschließenden Ausarbeitung im Grundarbeitskreis Politische Ökonomie, soll es deshalb nun Thema und Aufgabe dieser Studienarbeit sein, spezifischer auf die Theorie Walter Euckens einzugehen und dabei auch nach Ursachen für den o.g. Umstand zu suchen. So schließt sich an einen kurzen historisch-ökonomischen Rückblick, der gleichsam als Ausgangslage für den Wissenschaftler verstanden werden kann, eine Darstellung des klassischen Liberalismus an, die veranschaulichen soll, aus welcher theoretischen Perspektive Eucken sich den wirtschaftlichen Problemen seiner Zeit näherte. Seine Ordnungstheorie selbst wird im folgenden dann zu vertiefen sein. Dabei sollen die von Eucken vorgebrachten Kritikpunkte an verschiedenen Wirtschaftsformen genauso wie seine eigenen Vorstellungen bezüglich einer funktionierenden Wirtschaftsordnung nach neoliberalen Maßstäben im Mittelpunkt stehen. Nach einer kurzen kritischen Stellungnahme hierzu, bildet den Abschluss erneut eine historische Darstellung zur Verwirklichung der sozialen Marktwirtschaft, die überblickartig auch auf die theoretischen Unterschiede zum Neoliberalismus um Eucken eingehen wird.

THE FIRST GERMAN edition of this book appeared in 1940. Since then the book has gone through five more editions and has been translated into Spanish and Italian. The present English translation is based on the sixth German edition. The author was Professor of Economics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Professor Eucken was a student at a time when the Historical School dominated the teaching of econo mics at the German universities. Although, at the beginning of his career, he did some work along the lines of the Historical School, neither the ~ims nor the methods of historical research the field of economics as practised by the representatives in of the Historical School satisfied him; and the fact that the members of this school were unable to explain the causes of economic events such as the German inflation after World War I was an added reason for him to turn to economic theory. He became, among German economists, the foremost opponent of the Historical School, which he criticised in several publica tions. Through his wrItings and his teaching he contributed his share to the revival of interest in economic theory which was noticeable in the 'twenties. And he was one of the few economists left in Germany who helped to keep this interest alive during the 'thirties and during World War II. During this time he published Kapitaltheoretische Untersuchungen (1936), and the present volume, which immediately gave rise to an extensive discussion in German economic journals.

This volume is a collection of ten essays in which the authors assess the contribution of the German Ordo-liberals fifty years after the founders of the liberal movement in Germany stated their aims and objectives. The Ordo-liberals were a group of liberal economic and legal thinkers in the Federal Republic of Germany who came into prominence as a result of their influence on, and participation in, post-war economic policy in the Federal Republic when Ludwig Erhard was Minister for Economic Affairs and, later, Chancellor. They became known as Ordo-liberals because of their commitment to designing the appropriate economic and legal system. The essays in this volume consider not only the philosophy of the Ordo-liberals and their concept of the social market economy, but are also concerned with the contribution of the Ordo-liberals to more practical problems. The role of the public sector, the control of mergers and monopolies and the problem of sound money are among the topics considered, as well as the views of the Ordo-liberals on the international order. Many of the authors of these essays are well known internationally and they represent a wide range of contemporary liberal thought.
