Der große schwedische Denker N. Söderblom (1866–1931) war ein Pionier der vergleichenden Religionswissenschaft, Religionsphilosoph und Theologe, bedeutender schwedischer Erzbischof und Mitbegründer der ökumenischen Bewegung. Seine größten wissenschaftlichen Leistungen sind die Entdeckung des Heiligen als Grundbegriff der Religion und eine neue Interpretation der schriftlosen Religionen. Der Höhepunkt seiner ökumenischen Tätigkeit war die Konferenz in Stockholm 1925.Seine Theorie der Ökumene – Einheit in Mannigfaltigkeit, friedlicher Wettbewerb und praktische Zusammenarbeit gleichberechtigter, in Lehre und Organisation selbstständig bleibender Kirchengemeinschaften – ist bis heute aktuell. Für seine Bemühungen um den Weltfrieden wurde er 1930 mit dem Friedens-Nobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Ein großer Teil seines vielseitigen literarischen Werkes ist nur auf Schwedisch zugänglich und deshalb in Deutschland unbekannt. Die bisherige Literatur hat wichtige Aspekte seines Denkens analysiert.Dietz Lange stellt Söderbloms Denken und Wirken erstmals im Ganzen dar und stützt sich dabei nicht nur auf die Druckschriften, sondern auch auf den umfangreichen Nachlass, vor allem Briefe oder Tagebücher. Das Lebenswerk wird dabei in den biographischen Zusammenhang hineingestellt, in die wissenschaftliche Diskussionslage und allgemeine geistige Situation der Zeit eingeordnet und auf die sozialen, politischen und kirchlichen Verhältnisse der damaligen Welt bezogen. Auf diese Weise soll nicht nur ein Eindruck von Söderbloms weitem internationalen Horizont, sondern auch ein lebendiges Bild der Epoche, in der er gelebt hat, vermittelt werden.
