Kein weiteres Buch über die Conquista, sondern eines über Europa, über das europäische Bewußtsein, in dem Amerika gespiegelt wird, und das Bild Amerikas, in dem sich Europa spiegelt. Ein Buch über die Wahrnehmung des Anderen, seine Aneignung durch die europäische Kultur und die Medien dieses Prozesses. Deutschland und Italien erweisen sich als besonders geeignete Gegenstände für diese Fragestellung, weil sie zwar mit der Conquista wenig zu tun hatten, im Prozeß der intellektuellen Aneignung aber eine wichtige Rolle spielten, man denke nur an ihren Buchdruck. Immer noch sind viele Beiträge zur schlichten Erfassung von Kartographie und Buchdruck und ihrer Informationen über Amerika zu leisten, bevor man sich mit der alten Frage des Verhältnisses von wahrgenommenem und Wirklichkeit befaßt oder mit den Problemen, die die Neue Welt Europa stellt und die möglicherweise den europäischen Blick ebenfalls befangen machen. Die Kartographie muß ganz wörtlich ein neues Bild von der Welt entwerfen, während der Buchmarkt die vielfältige, neugierige Nachfrage, die von der Entdeckung Amerikas ausgelöst wurde, mit den Berichten von Reisenden, Missionaren und Naturforschern zu befriedigen versteht. Darüber hinaus stellen sich aber auch ethische und andere weiterreichende Fragen. War die Conquista aus der je unterschiedlichen Perspektive von Autoren wie Vitoria, Las Casas und Sepulveda als »gerechter Krieg« legitimiert oder nicht? Und wenn die neuentdeckten »Heiden« christianisiert und damit im Sinne des damaligen Selbstverständnisses der europäischen Kultur »zivilisiert« wurden, handelte es sich dann dabei um ihre bloße Übertölpelung oder ergeben sich daraus vielleicht Impulse für die kulturelle Entwicklung der ganzen westlichen Welt? Natürlich bleiben die Antworten weiter offen, aber die Beiträge des Bandes zeigen doch, wie sehr die angeblichen Probleme der Neuen Welt in Wirklichkeit die der Alten waren und in welchem Ausmaß ihr Bild der Neuen Welt Projektionen europäischer Mythen und Denkmuster enthält.

This study looks at the life and work of the eminent German-American author, poet, and historian, Heinrich A. Rattermann (1832-1923) and provides an historical legacy essential to an understanding of German-American history. He was well-known as editor of the historical journal Der Deutsche Pionier which was published by the German Pioneer Society of Cincinnati, Ohio, and is considered to be the leading German-American historical journal of the 19th century. In addition he edited Deutsch-Amerikanisches Magazin which was also important as a German-American historical journal. Born in Ankum, Germany, Rattermann emigrated with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio, and thereafter played an important role in German-American cultural affairs both regionally and nationally. This book is a re-edition of Sister Mary Edmund Spanheimer's biography of Heinrich Rattermann, which has long been out-of-print. Mary Spanheimer was a professor of German at the University of Saint Francis, Joliet, Illinois. Her biography on Rattermann is considered to be the definitive work on the topic.
