Jede Zeit hatte eine andere Herangehensweise an die mittelalterlichen Überlieferungen, und jede Interpretation hat bestimmte Aspekte und Thematiken in den Vordergrund des Interesses gerückt, während andere eher in den Hintergrund verschwanden. So ist der Stoff des Nibelungenliedes immer wieder neu dem Zeitgeist angepasst worden – die Menschen haben immer wieder neue, für sie interessante, Aspekte entdeckt und vertieft. Das Nibelungenlied ist also verbunden mit einer vielschichtigen und komplexen Rezeptionsgeschichte. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde es zur „deutschen Ilias“1 erklärt, und spätestens in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhundert besaß es den Stellenwert eines „deutschen Nationalepos“2. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde besonderer Wert auf die „unbedingte Gefolgsmannstreue“3 gelegt, und für den Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Nibelungenlied im Rahmen des deutschen Nationalismus für Propagandazwecke missbraucht4 und dabei „‚Opfer’ einer katastrophalen Fehldeutung“5. Nach 1945 ist ein Bruch in der Nibelungenrezeption zu erkennen; von nun an gibt es viele Versuche, sich dem Nibelungenlied kritisch zu nähern und sich differenziert mit ihm auseinander zu setzen. ------- 1 Bernhard R.
