Einleitung Am 9. November 1989 wurden die Grenzen zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland geöffnet und sie wurden auch nie wieder verschlossen. Die Mauer fiel und somit auch die Ideologie des kleinen Bruders der UDSSR. Dennoch sind Spuren, die das DDR - Regime in den Köpfen der ostdeutschen Bevölkerung hinterließ, nach über einem Jahrzehnt noch deutlich zu spüren. Die Auswirkungen sind besonders in dem Wahlverhalten der ostdeutschen Bevölkerung zu beobachten, die sich sichtlich von dem bekannten Muster des Wahlverhaltens in westlichen Demokratien und in Westdeutschland unterscheidet. Dahingehend sollen im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit die Gründe der Differenzen im ost- und westdeutschen Wahlverhalten näher beleuchtet werden. Im zweiten Teil soll die Rolle der PDS in Ostdeutschland erörtert werden, um dann die Bedeutung der PDS für das ostdeutsche Wählerverhalten genauer zuordnen zu können. Ist die PDS ein Symbol für die Ost- West- Differenzen im Wahlverhalten? Diese zentrale Fragestellung soll demnach den Roten Faden der Arbeit bilden. Inwiefern die Leitfrage beantwortet und die signifikanten Unterschiede im Verhalten zwischen ost- und westdeutschen Wählern herausgearbeitet werden kann, bleibt abzuwarten.

From about 5500 cal BC to soon after 5000 cal BC, the lifeways of the first farmers of central Europe, the LBK culture (Linearbandkeramik), are seen in distinctive practices of longhouse use, settlement forms, landscape choice, subsistence, material culture and mortuary rites. Within the five or more centuries of LBK existence a dynamic sequence of changes can be seen in, for instance, the expansion and increasing density of settlement, progressive regionalisation in pottery decoration, and at the end some signs of stress or even localised crisis. Although showing many features in common across its very broad distribution, however, the LBK phenomenon was not everywhere the same, and there is a complicated mixture of uniformity and diversity. This major study takes a strikingly large regional sample, from northern Hungary westwards along the Danube to Alsace in the upper Rhine valley, and addresses the question of the extent of diversity in the lifeways of developed and late LBK communities, through a wide-ranging study of diet, lifetime mobility, health and physical condition, the presentation of the bodies of the deceased in mortuary ritual. It uses an innovative combination of isotopic (principally carbon, nitrogen and strontium, with some oxygen), osteological and archaeological analysis to address difference and change across the LBK, and to reflect on cultural change in general.

The idea of a NATO Science Committee Institute on "Materials for Advanced Batteries" was suggested to JB and DWM by Dr. A. G. Chynoweth. His idea was to bring together experts in the field over the entire spectrum of pure research to applied research in order to familiarize everyone with potentially interesting new systems and the problems involved in their development. Dr. M. C. B. Hotz and Professor M. N. Ozdas were instrumental in helping organize this meeting as a NATO Advanced Science Institute. An organlzlng committee consisting of the three of us along with W. A. Adams, U. v Alpen, J. Casey and J. Rouxel organized the program. The program consisted of plenary talks and poster papers which are included in this volume. Nearly half the time of the conference was spent in study groups. The aim of these groups was to assess the status of several key aspects of batteries and prospects for research opportunities in each. First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
