Is there a natural tendency toward the political integration of states that are united in culture but divided in politics? Disjoined Partners arrives at a largely negative response. In an application of political science techniques to a subject traditionally in the domain of history, Peter J. Katzenstein analyzes Austro-German relations since 1815 in six chronologically arranged case studies. Asking why these partners remain disjoined, Katzenstein finds the answer in the persistence of Austria’s political autonomy. In an appendix, the author illustrates how this type of analysis could be extended to include an examination of the unification of Germany and of Italy in the middle of the nineteenth century and of the fragmentation of Sweden-Norway and England-Ireland at the beginning of the twentieth. His study sheds new light on the reasons for the continued political autonomy of nation-states. Disjoined Partners derives from the author's dissertation, which was awarded the Charles Sumner Prize at Harvard and the American Political Science Association’s Helen Dwight Reid Award for the best dissertation of the year in the field of international relations, law, and politics. It has only been recognised tardily and with reluctance that during the Second World War hundreds of thousands of itinerants met the same horrendous fate as Jews and other victims of Nazism. Gypsies appear to appeal to the imagination simply as social outcasts and scapegoats or, in a flattering but no more illuminating light, as romantic outsiders. In this study, contemporary notions about Gypsies are traced back as far as possible to their roots, in an attempt to lay bare why stigmatisation of gypsies, or rather groups labelled as such, has continuned from the distant past even to today.

The application of digital technologies to historical newspapers have changed the research landscape historians were used to. An Eldorado? Despite undeniable advantages, the new digital affordance of historical newspapers also transforms research practices and confronts historians with new challenges. Drawing on a growing community of practices, the impresso project invited scholars experienced with digitised newspaper collections with the aim of encouraging a discussion on heuristics, source criticism and interpretation of digitized newspapers. This volume provides a snapshot of current research on the subject and offers three perspectives: how digitisation is transforming access to and exploration of historical newspaper collections; how automatic content processing allows for the creation of new layers of information; and, finally, what analyses this enhanced material opens up. ‘impresso - Media Monitoring of the Past’ is an interdisciplinary research project that applies text mining tools to digitised historical newspapers and integrates the resulting data into historical research workflows by means of a newly developed user interface. The question of how best to adapt text mining tools and their use by humanities researchers is at the heart of the impresso enterprise.
