Diese vom griechischen Philosophen Heraklit vorgenommene naturhafte und glorifizierende Beschreibung des Krieges prägte die menschliche Vorstellung dieses größten Übels der Welt über mehr als zwei Jahrtausende. Doch stimmt diese Ansicht denn? Kann man tatsächlich von einem zwanghaften Zusammenhang zwischen Mensch und Krieg sprechen? Dies ist eine der Fragen, auf die die vorliegende Arbeit eine Antwort zu geben versucht. Noch Anfang der neunziger Jahre, als der amerikanische Historiker Francis Fukuyama – auf Grund des Zusammenbruchs der Sowjetunion und dem damit verbundenen Ende des Kalten Krieges – ein Ende der Geschichte postulierte, schien die Welt in eine Ära des globalen Friedens einzutreten . Doch diese Sichtweise wich im Zuge der Balkankriege der neunziger Jahre und der durch die Terroranschläge des 11. September ausgelösten Kriege in Afghanistan und im Irak relativ schnell einer realistischeren Einsicht. Damit sind die Vorstellung und die Beschäftigung mit den Themen des Krieges und des Friedens in das Bewusstsein der westlichen Welt zurückgekehrt, weswegen eine historische Analyse dieser Begrifflichkeiten sinnvoll erscheint. Die Beantwortung der Fragen nach „Was ist Krieg?“ und „Was ist Frieden?“ soll demnach ein weiteres Anliegen der vorliegenden Untersuchung sein. Es ist darauf hinzuweisen, dass diese Arbeit auf Grund der Komplexität und der Fülle des Themas keineswegs abschließenden Charakter beansprucht, sondern einen ersten zwangsweise verkürzten Überblick geben will, der aber in einer weiterführenden Arbeit vertieft werden müsste. Auf Grund dieser Feststellung ist auch die Literaturgrundlage nur exemplarisch möglich gewesen und kann demzufolge nur einen Bruchteil derselbigen zum Thema widerspiegeln. Die wichtigsten Erkenntnisse zum Thema liefern der immer noch unverzichtbare und lesenswerte Clausewitz, der einen Gesamtüberblick über die Begrifflichkeiten und deren historischen Entwicklungsverlauf von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg gebende Wolfrum sowie für die aktuelle Diskussion die überaus anregenden Expertisen Münklers. Im Folgenden wird zunächst der historische Verlauf der beiden zu untersuchenden Begrifflichkeiten aufgezeigt, um anschließend eine nähere Definition der Termini Krieg bzw. Frieden vorzunehmen. Danach soll auf diverse Definitionsprobleme aufmerksam gemacht werden. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse der Arbeit kurz zusammengefasst.

In dieser Arbeit möchte ich eine dieser Theorien herausgreifen und sie anhand vor allem eines Buches versuchen verkürzend darzulegen. Auf den folgenden Seiten werde ich also anhand des Werkes `Das Ende der Geschichte ́ die Theorien des Francis Fukuyama wiederspiegeln. Wobei ich natürlich einleitend etwas zu seiner Person schildern werde, um dann zum Kern seiner Aussagen zu kommen. Anschließend möchte ich seine Sichtweise einer liberalen Demokratie, die er unter drei Säulen zusammenfasst, darlegen. Wie er nun die Menschen und die Staaten am Ende der Geschichte sieht, werde ich danach erörtern. Am Ende meiner Arbeit werde ich noch auf Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der Theorien von Fukuyama und Huntington eingehen, was mir als sehr nützlich für eine eigene Stellungnahme erscheint.

Clausewitz's On War has, at least until very recently, been regarded as the most important work of theory on its subject. But since the end of the Cold War in 1990, and even more since the 9/11 attacks on the United states in 2001, an increasing number of commentators have argued that On War has lost its analytical edge as a tool for understanding war. They have argued that Clausewitz was concerned solely with inter-state war and with properly defined armies, and that the sorts of conflicts which he discussed are therefore part of a historical pattern which dominated Europe between 1648, the end of the Thirty Years War, and 1990 itself.
