The dangers of illegal drugs are well known and rarely disputed, but how harmful are alcohol and tobacco by comparison? The issue of what a drug is and how we should live with them affects us all: parents, teachers, users – anyone who has taken a painkiller or drunk a glass of wine. Written by renowned psychiatrist, Professor David Nutt, Drugs without the hot air casts a refreshingly honest light on drugs and answers crucial questions that are rarely ever disputed. What are we missing by banning medical research into magic mushrooms, LSD and cannabis? Can they be sources of valuable treatments? How can psychedelics treat depression? Drugs without the hot air covers a wide range of topics, from addiction and whether addictive personalities exist to the role of cannabis in treating epilepsy, an overview on the opioid crisis, and an assessment of how harmful vaping is. This new expanded and revised second edition includes even more details on international policies, particularly in the US. David's research has won international support, reducing drug-related harm by introducing policies that are founded on scientific evidence. But there is still a lot to be done. Accessibly written, this much-awaited second edition is an important book for everyone that brings us all up to date with the 'war of drugs'.

Altering American Consciousness written by Caroline Jean Acker and has been published by Univ of Massachusetts Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

Virtually every American alive has at some point consumed at least one, and very likely more, consciousness altering drug. Yet, if the use of drugs is a constant in American history, the way they have been perceived has varied extensively. Just as the corrupting cigarettes of the early twentieth century ("coffin nails" to contemporaries) became the glamorous accessory of Hollywood stars and American GIs in the 1940s, only to fall into public disfavor later as an unhealthy and irresponsible habit, the social significance of every drug changes over time. The essays in this volume explore these changes, showing how the identity of any psychoactive substance -- from alcohol and nicotine to cocaine and heroin -- owes as much to its users, their patterns of use, and the cultural context in which the drug is taken, as it owes to the drug's documented physiological effects. Rather than seeing licit drugs and illicit drugs, recreational drugs and medicinal drugs, "hard" drugs and "soft" drugs as mutually exclusive categories, the book challenges readers to consider the ways in which drugs have shifted historically from one category to another. -- From publisher's description.

Justice And Unjusticiability written by Ermanno Calzolaio and has been published by LIT Verlag Münster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-10 with categories.

The book tries to identify the main contours of unjusticiability and non-justiciability from an historical and comparative perspective distinguishing between common law world and civil law tradition. In the light of a general overview, the aim of this publication is to reflect on the utility of paving the way for a much wider approach to unjusticiability. More precisely, some scholars have recently suggested that such a notion could embrace all the situations where a court does not decide a case, so that it is impossible for the plaintiff to have the case decided by a court. A first category covers the situations where the court refuses to judge because it does not want to judge. A second category is related to all the cases where there is an impossibility to reach a decision. Any case where the judge cannot or does not wish to make justice--si iudex non facit iustitiam--continues to indicate a series of new (and old) questions.

Transfrontier conservation challenges African borders, the "colonial scars of history". The global tourism industry has discovered the potential of African borderlands for adventure travel. Iconic animals and indigenous cultures are marketed in the same breath, often evoking stereotypical images of "Wild Africa". Can ecotourism and ethno-tourism be commended as viable panaceas for environmental protection and development? The marketing of nature and culture raises important questions on the meaningful inclusion of local communities as tourism entrepreneurs. Living museums and cultural villages are emerging as start-ups of local communities. They commodify ethnicity albeit on their own terms. This volume debates the economy of conservation, providing diverse perspectives on an issue of great contemporary relevance.
