Die von der danischen Zeitung Jyllands-Posten im September 2005 veroffentlichten "Mohammed Karikaturen" waren fur manche ein Test der Grenzen der Pressefreiheit, fur andere nur eine bosartige und geschmacklose Provokation. Der Karikaturenstreit wirft eine Reihe von Fragen auf: Geht es um die Verteidigung der Pressefreiheit oder um blosse Islamophobie? Steht hier westliche Toleranz gegen ostliche Borniertheit oder geht es um gegenseitigen Respekt und Zuruckhaltung? Wurde der ganze Konflikt durch die Medien kunstlich erzeugt und angeheizt? Mussen wir in der globalisierten Medienkultur eine neue Medienethik der interkulturellen Anerkennung entwickeln? Und wie konnen wir erreichen, dass dieser Respekt wechselseitig ist und nicht bloss zur liberalen Toleranz der Intoleranz wird? To some, the infamous "Mohammed Cartoons" that were published in September 2005 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten tested the limits of the freedom of the press. Others regarded them as a malicious and tasteless provocation. And for yet others, they were a welcome excuse for violent protests. The cartoon debate raises a number of questions: What is paramount here, defense of the freedom of the press or mere Islamophobia? Is Western tolerance pitted against Oriental narrow-mindedness, or is this rather an issue of mutual respect and restraint? Was the whole conflict artificially created and inflamed by the media? Do we need to develop a new media ethics of intercultural recognition in the global media culture? And how can we ensure that this respect is mutual and not just laissezfaire tolerance of intolerance?

Although many scholars recognize literary similarities between Hosea, Amos, Micah, and Zephaniah, defining the compositional relationship between these texts remains a matter of debate. Following the scholarly trajectory of exploring the compositional relationship between the Twelve prophets, several scholars argue that these four prophetic texts formed a precursory collection to the Book of the Twelve. Yet even among advocates for this ‘Book of the Four’ there remain differences in defining the form and function of the collection. By reexamining the literary parallels between these texts, Werse shows how different methodological convictions have led to the diverse composition models in the field today. Through careful consideration of emerging insights in the study of deuteronomism and scribalism, Werse provides an innovative composition model explaining how these four texts came to function as a collection in the wake of the traumatic destruction of Jerusalem. This volume explores a historic function of these prophetic voices by examining the editorial process that drew them together.

Above all else that the sixteenth-century German Reformer was known for, Martin Luther was a Doctor of the Holy Scriptures. One of the most characteristic features of Luther’s approach to Scripture was his resolved christological interpretation of the Bible. Many of the Reformer’s interpreters have looked back upon Luther’s “Christ-centered” exposition of the Scriptures with sentimentality but have often labeled it as “Christianization,” particularly in regards to Luther’s approach of the Old Testament, dismissing his relevance for today’s faithful readers of God’s Word. This study revisits this assessment of Luther’s christological interpretation of Scripture by way of critical analysis of the Reformer’s “prefaces to the Bible” that he wrote for his translation of the Scriptures into the German vernacular. This work contends that Luther foremost believes Jesus Christ to be the sensus literalis of Scripture on the basis of the Bible’s messianic promise, not enforcing a dogmatic principle onto the scriptural text and its biblical authors that would be otherwise foreign to them. This study asserts that Luther’s exegesis of the Bible’s “letter” (i.e., his engagement with the biblical text) is primarily responsible for his conviction that Christ is Holy Scripture’s literal sense.

Transcending this hitherto dominating narrow focus, this book offers a comparative analysis of a body of contemporary Sunnite Qurʾanic commentaries from the Arab World, Indonesia and Turkey. It takes into account both the influence of specific local conditions and the common intellectual heritage they rely on. By paying special attention not only to new developments, but also to the embeddedness of contemporary Qurʾanic exegesis into a more than thousand-year-old intellectual tradition, it provides new insights into the religious, academic, political and social context of exegetical practice in the modern Islamic World.
