Die Belagerung der "Festung Europa" durch illegale Einwanderung und die Reaktionen verschreckter Bürger darauf sind nur ein Beispiel für Auslöser des Volkszorns. Die Griechenland-Krise bzw. die europäische Finanzkrise, Terrorismus, Parallelgesellschaften in Europa und schwere Verstöße der USA und Russlands gegen das Völkerrecht: All das sind Quellen des Volkszorns. Die wachsende Schere zwischen Arm und Reich, der Trend zu mehr Überwachung, Vorratsdatenspeicherung, Einschränkungen der Presse- und Meinungsfreiheit kommen hinzu. Die Folgen sind eine alarmierende Wahlverweigerung, linke Protestbewegungen wie "Blockupy", die griechische Syriza und die spanische "Podemos", aber auch rechte Protestbewegungen wie PEGIDA und neue Parteien wie die "Alternative für Deutschland" (AfD). Alte Maßstäbe scheinen nicht mehr zu gelten. Auch Außenpolitik wird immer widersprüchlicher und damit unglaubwürdiger. Europa ist dabei, ähnlich wie Russland und die USA seine Ideale zu verraten, und agiert teilweise in Krisen ohne demokratische Legitimation. Wenn es nicht gelingt, die Quellen des Zorns auszutrocknen, ist eine Flutwelle zu erwarten, die alles wegspült, was uns lieb und teuer ist. Ein Umdenken, vor allem aber ein neues Handeln sind nötig, um eine Katastrophe zu verhindern – nicht nur bei der Energiewende und im Kampf gegen Hunger und Armut, der längst auch in Deutschland tobt. Wenn wir Wirtschaftsflüchtinge ausgrenzen, bloß um den sprunghaften Anstieg der Bürgerkriegsflüchtlinge zu bewältigen, vergessen wir diesen Kampf gegen Hunger und blanke existenzielle Not. Kein Land der Welt ist allein in der Lage, diese Probleme zu bewältigen. Aber die Ressourcen dafür sind da, und viele Lösungsvorschläge liegen auf dem Tisch; es geht also um Aufklärung, um eine offene Diskussion mit den Ewig-Gestrigen, die konstruktive Lösungen blockieren und auf jedem Krisenherd ihr eigenes Süppchen kochen.

Through analyses of three eventful years in Nazi Germany’s history – the Kristallnacht pogrom, the invasion of Poland and the invasion of Soviet Russia – this book explores the violence of states. All three events were part of the Nazi colonial project and led to mass killings, eventually resulting in the systematic murder of Jews becoming a major war aim – one that Germany would pursue to the end, even when it became clear that the military conflict could no longer be won. Drawing on voluminous historical and sociological literature, as well as documentary and contemporary evidence, the author presents a new account of the phenomenon of extreme state violence as a special category of violence, in which the armed forces, maintained in a state of readiness, are used unnecessarily and excessively, often on thin pretexts, and, unlike coercive violence, only rarely for the purposes of carrying messages to the public. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, history and anthropology concerned with mass and state violence.

Die Dokumentenedition Die Verfolgung und Ermordung der europäischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistische Deutschland 1933 - 1945 (VEJ) versammelt erstmals eine thematisch umfassende Auswahl von bislang überwiegend unveröffentlichten Quellen zum Holocaust. Das Werk zeigt die Kontexte und die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Dynamiken, die zu diesem beispiellosen Massenverbrechen führten. Die Edition umfasst 16 Bände mit ca. 5.500 zeitgenössischen, wissenschaftlich kommentierten Zeugnissen der Verfolgten, der Täter und nicht unmittelbar Beteiligter. Für die Bearbeitung der Bände konnten 26 Expertinnen und Experten gewonnen werden. Die Dokumente wurden aus 21 Sprachen ins Deutsche übersetzt. Jedem Band ist eine ausführliche Einleitung vorangestellt, mit mehreren Registern und einem Sachindex können die Dokumente erschlossen werden. Die Bände sind ein vielfältig nutzbares Hilfsmittel sowohl für die Forschung als auch für die historische Bildungsarbeit. Die Edition wurde von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert und vom Institut für Zeitgeschichte München-Berlin, der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg und dem Bundesarchiv herausgegeben.
