Das 16. Jahrhundert weist eine große Zahl von Frauen auf, die aus eigenem Recht regierten, eine Tatsache, die um so erstaunlicher ist, zieht man die Renaissancevorstellungen von Natur und Rollenverhalten der Frau in Betracht und vergleicht sie mit dem zeitgenossischen, mannlich definierten Herrscherideal. Am Beispiel Elizabeths I. von England, der wohl bekanntesten regierenden Konigin des Jahrhunderts, werden zunächst die besonderen Bedingungen analysiert, unter denen eine Frau Herrschaft ausübte. Aus geschlechtsspezifischen Grunden unterschied sich nicht nur ihre Erziehung von derjenigen eines Prinzen Auch die Möglichkeiten des Auftretens in der politischen Öffentlichkeit und die Konsequenzen einer Eheschließung waren fur die regierende Frau andere als fur einen männlichen Souverän. Sollten sich geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede nicht autoritatsmindernd auswirken, mußte sie ihnen in ihrem Verhalten und ihren Äußerungen Rechnung tragen. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung steht dabei die Selbstinszenierung der Königin in den von ihr verfaßten Reden und Gebeten, mit der sie auf die besonderen Bedingungen weiblicher Herrschaft reagierte.
