The question of whether Britain is "apart from or a part of Europe" (D. Abulafia) has gained significance in recent years. This book reassesses an underexplored field of early modern transnational history: the variety of ways in which connections between Britain and German-speaking Europe shaped developments. After a comprehensive introduction, this book is divided into three parts: cross-border transfers and appropriations of knowledge; coping with alterity in intergovernmental contacts; and ideologising the cultural nation. The topics range from the exchange of religious and political ideas over court life, diplomacy, and espionage to literary and philosophical debates. Particular attention is paid to the media processes involved and to the practical value of knowledge about the "other" in different historical contexts. European Contexts for English Republicanism offers new perspectives on early modern English republicanism through its focus on the Continental reception of and engagement with seventeenth-century English thinkers and political events. Looking both at political ideas and at the people that shaped them, the collection examines English republican thought in its wider European context during the later seventeenth and eighteenth century. In a number of case studies, the contributors assess the different ways in which English republican ideas were not only shaped by the thought of the ancients, but also by contemporary authors from all over Europe, such as Hugo Grotius or Christoph Besold. They demonstrate that English republican thinkers did not only act in dialogue with Continental authors and scholars, their ideas in turn also left a long-lasting legacy in Europe as they were received, transformed and put to new uses by thinkers in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland. Far from being an exclusively transatlantic affair, as much of the established scholarship suggests, English republican thought also left its legacy on the European Continent, finding its way into wider debates about the rights and wrongs of the English Civil War and the nature of government, while later translations of English republican works also influenced the key thinkers of the French Revolution and the liberals of the nineteenth century. Bringing together a range of fresh and original essays by British and European scholars in the field of early modern intellectual history and English studies, this collection of essays revises a one-sided approach to English republicanism and widens the scope of study beyond linguistic and national boundaries by looking at English republicans and their continental networks and legacy.

Sofort nach seinem Erscheinen löste der von Jakob Mauvillon (1743–1794) und Ludwig August Unzer (1748–1774) gemeinsam verfasste Briefwechsel Ueber den Werth einiger Deutschen Dichter (1771/72) aufgrund der radikalen Kritik etablierter Dichtergrößen einen Sturm der Entrüstung aus. Während im ersten Teil das gesamte dichterische Werk Gellerts kritisch seziert und demontiert wird, was als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Attacken auf Autoritäten der Zeit wie Wieland und Lessing diente, nehmen die Verfasser im zweiten Teil eine Rangordnung der deutschen Dichter vor, indem sie deren Dichtungen einer umfassenden Klassifizierung nach den Gesichtspunkten einer Genieästhetik unterziehen. Die Radikalität ihres ästhetischen Ansatzes spiegelt sich in der zeitgenössischen Kritik wider, die zum Großteil vernichtend war, abgesehen von wenigen Ausnahmen, unter denen vor allem eine Rezension in den Frankfurter gelehrten Anzeigen hervorsticht, die aus der Feder von Goethe oder Merck stammt. Auch wenn die Briefe Ueber den Werth einiger Deutschen Dichter heute nahezu vergessen sind, zeugen Urteile wie diese davon, dass die Streitschrift, rückblickend betrachtet, als »Ferment« einer neuen Kritik im Geiste der Genieästhetik und als Wegbereiter des Sturm und Drang angesehen werden kann.

Zeithistoriker bewegen sich nicht im akademischen Elfenbeinturm, sondern sie suchen ein breites Publikum ebenso wie die Nähe zu den politischen Entscheidungsträgern. Dennoch wird Zeitgeschichte als eine Erkenntnisform jenseits der bloßen Tagespolitik verstanden.
