Mildred Harnack, geb. Fish, stammte ursprünglich aus Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann Arvid Harnack zog sie nach Deutschland und lebte seit 1930 in Berlin. Hier lehrte die Literaturwissenschaftlerin an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (heute Humboldt-Universität) und am Berliner Abendgymnasium (heute Peter A. Silbermann-Schule). Bereits kurz nach der Machtübernahme von Adolf Hitler hatte sich um das Ehepaar Harnack ein Kreis von Freunden gebildet, der gegen die Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten opponierte. Dazu zählten auch Karl Behrens und Bodo Schlösinger, die beide Schüler Mildred Harnacks am Berliner Abendgymnasium waren. Mildred Harnack konnte mit Hilfe ihrer Kontakte zur amerikanischen Botschaft ihren Schülern im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland ansonsten nicht zugängliche Informationen besorgen. Aufgrund von Funkkontakten des Freundeskreises zur Sowjetunion wurde die Gruppe von den Nationalsozialisten Rote Kapelle genannt – „rot“ bezog sich auf deren linke Haltung und mit „Kapelle“ wurden Funker assoziiert, die wie Pianisten in einer Kapelle spielen. Der Berliner Oppositionszirkel umfasste bis zu seiner Zerschlagung durch die Nationalsozialisten etwa 150 Personen verschiedenster Berufsgruppen, unterschiedlicher parteipolitischer Einstellungen und Konfessionen. Die Gruppe verfertigte oppositionelle Flugblätter und lieferte Informationen an die amerikanische Botschaft sowie an die Sowjetunion. Mildred Harnack wurde – wie viele ihrer Mitstreiterinnen und Mitstreiter – nach ihrer Verhaftung vom Reichskriegsgericht zum Tode verurteilt und am 16. Februar 1943 in Plötzensee guillotiniert. In diesem Band stellen Studierende der Universität Potsdam sowie Hörerinnen und Hörer der Peter A. Silbermann-Schule (Berlin) nach einem kurzen Überblick zum Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus in Deutschland das Netzwerk der Roten Kapelle sowie die Biographien von Mildred Harnack und ihren Schülern Karl Behrens und Bodo Schlösinger vom Berliner Abendgymnasium eindrücklich vor.

Die Arbeit bewegt sich von der „Roten Kapelle“ hin zur Ästhetik des Widerstands. Diese Anführung an die historische Harnack-Schulze/Boysen Gruppe, wie sie im ersten Teil der Arbeit erfolgen wird, dient einer Erleichterung des Verständnisses für eine historische Darstellung der Romanfiguren und schafft die Möglichkeit eines Vergleichs zwischen Historie und Roman. Hierbei nähert sich der erste Teil der Arbeit der Harnack/Schulze-Boysen Gruppe mit den Methoden historisch-kritischer Forschung, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf einer biografischen und zeithistorischen Untersuchung liegt. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit, "Die Ästhetik des Widerstands" – ein widerständiger Roman, erfolgt eine Analyse der „Roten Kapelle“ im Roman aus einer hermeneutischen und sozialgeschichtlichen Perspektive. Nennenswert erscheint auch die Frage nach dem Forschungsstand der zu untersuchenden Gegenstände, insbesondere derer, die die „Rote Kapelle“ betreffen, die auch in Kapitel zur Vergangenheitsbewältigung und zur Aufarbeitungspolitik noch näher diskutiert werden sollen. Während der Umfang an wissenschaftlicher Literatur zur Ästhetik des Widerstands umfangreich und insbesondere seit dem Abschluss der Romantrilogie im Jahr 1981 und dem Tod des Autors am 10. Mai 1982 im ständigen Wachsen begriffen ist, erfuhr die „Rote Kapelle“ erst in den 1990er eine erkennbare Neubewertung seitens der historischen Publizistik. Vor allem die Bemühungen um und anschließende Einbeziehung der Widerstandsgruppierung Harnack/Schulze-Boysen in die Berliner Gedenkstätte "Deutscher Widerstand" Ende der 1980er Jahren und speziell die bald daraufhin folgende Dauerausstellung „Rote Kapelle“ müssen als ein erster objektiver Impuls und eine Zäsur in der Annäherung der Geschichte an den Freundschaftskreis Harnack/Schulze-Boysen in der bundesdeutschen Öffentlichkeit verstanden werden. „Ein Portrait der Widerstandsgruppen um Arvid Harnack und Harro Schulze-Boysen in Fotografien und Selbstzeugnissen“ im Jahr 1992 stellten eine weitere bedeutende Aufarbeitungszäsur dar, in deren Folge ein ernsthaftes geschichtswissenschaftliches Interesse an der Erforschung von „Roter Kapelle“ geweckt wurde, das sich von manipulativen Fehleinschätzungen zu befreien suchte.
