Jahrhundert erbracht: Sie fugte die neuen Nationalstaaten in die internationale Politik ein, und sie half bei der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Integration innerhalb der Staaten und auch in den Kolonialreichen, die europaischen Staaten errichteten. Um den Blick auf die Monarchie in Europa zu scharfen wird zum Vergleich ihre Rolle im britischen Empire und in Japan betrachtet. Im Ausblick wird der Funktionswandel der Monarchie im 20. Jahrhundert skizziert.
