Focusing on the sociolinguistic history of Germanic languages, the current volume challenges the traditional teleological approach of language historiography. The 30 contributions present alternative histories of ten ‘big’ as well as ‘small’ Germanic languages and varieties in the last 300 years. Topics covered in this book include language variation and change and the politics of language contact and choice, seen against the background of standardization processes of written and oral text genres and from the viewpoint of larger sections of the population.

Polnische Sprache Nach Der Wende 1989 written by Małgorzata Warchoł-Schlottmann and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Poland categories.

A Language Management Approach To Language Problems written by Goro Christoph Kimura and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-20 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In recent years there has been increased interest in examining the treatment of language problems across different levels of society, ranging from individual interactional issues to language policy and planning at the national or supra-national level. Among the various approaches to tackle this issue, Language Management Theory (LMT) provides a framework to address behaviour towards language problems on differet levels explicitly and comprehensively. Using LMT as a unifying theoretical concept, the chapters in this volume examine the links between micro and macro dimensions in their analyses of a variety of language problems in Asian and European contexts. This body of work illustrates that the LMT framework is able to show the characteristics of different dimensions clearly, especially when combined with a conceptualization of the micro and macro as a continuum of intertwining elements. This volume will appeal both to those interested in language policy and planning as well as those interested in interaction between speakers from different language backgrounds.

Survival And Development Of Language Communities written by F. Xavier Vila Moreno and has been published by Multilingual Matters this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-09 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Too small to be big, but also too big to be really small, medium-sized language communities (MSLCs) face their own challenges in a rapidly globalising world where multilingualism and mobility seem to be eroding the old securities that the monolingual nation states provided. The questions to be answered are numerous: What are the main areas in which the position of these languages is actually threatened? How do these societies manage their diversity (both old and new)? Has state machinery really become as irrelevant in terms of language policy as their portrayals often suggest? This book explores the responses to these and other challenges by seven relatively successful MSLCs, so that their lessons can be applied more generally to other languages striving for long term survival.

The authors of this volume analyze language contact situations emerging in East and Central Europe, Australia, and Japan. The individual chapters focus on language problems which appear in concrete interactions between speakers of various languages. The objective of the book is to demonstrate the capacity of the language management framework on the basis of highly diversified empirical material and thus aid in the solving of similar language problems which arise in different types of intercultural contact. The chapters contribute to the forming of a new approach to the processes underlying linguistic diversity, covering both its micro and macro aspects.
