Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Als das Thema dieser Arbeit fest stand, galt es zunächst, einen fast unüberschaubaren Fundus an Literatur zu sichten, zu lesen und zu bearbeiten. Viele Bücher waren zu beschaffen, Archive mussten aufgesucht und durchforstet werden. Selbst das Internet schien da eine schier unerschöpfliche Quelle zu sein. Für die Arbeit Wichtiges musste vom Unwichtigen getrennt werden. Aber was war wichtig, und was war weniger relevant? Ein Großteil dieser Epoche deutscher Geschichte wurde bereits in der Vergangenheit erforscht und durchleuchtet. Viele Fragen wurden innerhalb der letzten über sechs Jahrzehnte beantwortet, viele blieben jedoch unbeantwortet - und werden es wohl auch bleiben. Als erstes galt es festzustellen, wie sich der Forschungsstand darstellt. Welche Fragen sind noch offen und was bedarf noch einer expliziteren Aufarbeitung? Thema der Arbeit waren also Die SS-Totenkopfverbände im KZ Buchenwald . Sicher ist, wie bereits festgestellt, ein umfangreiches Literaturangebot zu diesem Thema vorhanden und man könnte meinen, die Thematik wäre erschöpft. Doch stellten sich selbst bei der Auswahl des Themas und der späteren Bearbeitung noch jede Menge Fragen, die dazu veranlassten, sich eingehender damit zu beschäftigen. Sie trugen eine schwarze Uniform und waren der Schrecken einer ganzen Nation. Sie führten den Totenkopf an ihrer Mütze und schworen dem Führer ewige Treue. Sie folgten der doppelten Sigrune und ermordeten Millionen von Menschen . Doch wer waren die SS-Totenkopfverbände? Bekannt ist, dass über den Zeitraum des Bestehens des Lagers die SS-Verbände nahezu ständig wechselten und nicht ausschließlich eine SS-Einheit für das Geschehene verantwortlich ist. Doch welche SS-Truppen befanden sich tatsächlich von 1937 bis 1945 auf dem Ettersberg? Welche Menschen steckten hinter der Fassade der einzelnen Führungspersönlichkeiten der Totenkopfverbände, speziell im Konzentrationslager Buchenwald? Waren alle von ihrer Tätigkeit überzeugt und machten alle aus reiner Loyalität, und vor allem freiwillig, mit? Oder gab es Widerstände, gar Auflehnung, gegen das, was sie da taten? Hatten sie Skrupel, Abscheu oder sogar Mitleid mit ihren Opfern? Welchen Bevölkerungsschichten gehörten die Angehörigen der SS-Einheiten an? Und vieles mehr. Eine Antwort auf all diese Fragen sollte gefunden werden. Dies stellte sich auf Grund der Komplexität des Themas, jedoch auch wegen des Mangels an Zeitzeugen, als große Herausforderung [...]

Wer waren die SS-Totenkopfverbände? Welche Menschen steckten hinter der Fassade der einzelnen Führungspersönlichkeiten dieser Verbände, speziell im Konzentrationslager Buchenwald? Ziel dieser Studie ist es, darzustellen, welche SS-Totenkopfeinheiten in den Jahren des Bestehens des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald von 1937 bis 1945 auf dem Ettersberg ihren Dienst verrichteten. Dazu werden Verpflegungs- und Bekleidungslisten sowie Laufzettel aus der damaligen Zeit herangezogen, die belegen, dass Angehörige bestimmter Einheiten in Buchenwald tatsächlich eingekleidet und versorgt wurden. Anhand dieser Listen kann zudem die Struktur dieser SS-Verbände rekonstruiert werden. Ein weiterer Aspekt der Studie sind die Führungspersönlichkeiten dieser Einheiten. Verschiedene Personalakten von unterschiedlichen Personen, bezogen auf ihre Funktionen und Dienstränge, werden dazu betrachtet. Deutlich wird dabei, dass es sich bei den SS-Führern zunächst um Personen aus völlig normalen Sozialstrukturen handelt, bevor sie in den Reihen der SS zu den berüchtigten Tätern wurden. Alle im biographischen Teil der Arbeit aufgeführten SS-Führer hatten vor ihrer Karriere in der SS bürgerliche, und teilweise recht gut bezahlte Berufe. Die meisten waren bis Kriegsende und darüber hinaus verheiratet, was wiederum darauf schließen lässt, dass ihre Tätigkeit im Lager Buchenwald von den Familienangehörigen befürwortet oder zumindest toleriert wurde. Im Weiteren wird das Alltagsleben der SS im Lager Buchenwald dargestellt. Kommandanturbefehle des Lagerkommandanten Karl Koch, die für die gesamte SS im Lager und somit auch für die SS-Totenkopfverbände galten, dienen hierfür als Grundlage. Aufgeführt sind dienstliche Begebenheiten im Lager selbst sowie Geschichten, die mit dem Leben der SS-Männer außerhalb ihrer Dienstzeit in Weimar und Umgebung in Verbindung stehen. Es handelt sich dabei teilweise um bedeutende Ereignisse, aber auch weniger bedeutsame Vorkommnisse, die es dennoch wert sind, erzählt zu werden. Zusätzlich wird die SS, ihre Entstehung und Entwicklung, ausführlich dargestellt. Ebenso wird die Entstehung des Konzentrationslager Buchenwald, dessen Insassen und die ihnen gegenüber angewandten Strafmaßmaßnahmen überblickartig thematisiert.
