Sogenannte directories – gedruckte Aufstellungen der Gewerbetreibenden einer Stadt, die oft kombiniert waren mit Reiseführer-ähnlichen Inhalten – avancierten in England ab dem 18. Jahrhundert zu populären Medien. In einer Phase rasanter Urbanisierung erfüllten sie vielfältige Funktionen für die Orientierung in städtischen Räumen, die Strukturierung von Kommunikation und die Organisation von Wissen. Dennoch hat diese Mediengattung in der historischen Forschung bisher nur wenig Beachtung erfahren. Das Buch schließt diese Forschungslücke, indem es untersucht, welchen Beitrag die directories dazu leisteten, Stadträume entzifferbar und navigierbar zu machen, sie zu deuten und mitzugestalten. Es eröffnet einen facettenreichen Blick auf das komplexe Verhältnis zwischen Medien und städtischem (Er)Leben sowie auf die Wahrnehmung und Aneignung von Räumen. Zugleich leistet es einen Beitrag zur Historisierung alltäglicher und oft als selbstverständlich betrachteter Techniken und Medien der räumlichen Orientierung.

Stadt zu „lesen“ impliziert eine Sichtweise auf das Objekt Stadt vor dem Hintergrund der Denkbilder von Walter Benjamin. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, auf welche Art und Weise man dem Sinn einer Sache nachspüren kann und auf diesem Weg zu Erkenntnissen gelangt. Im Lesen offenbart sich eine wirksame Erkenntnismethode, denn jede Handlung des Menschen ist ein kulturgenetisches Formulieren, ein Schreiben, ein Einschreiben von Inhalten und Gedanken in den Ausdruck der Dinge, in Räume und Phänomene. In einer Gegenwart, in der angesichts von Verstädterung nachgedacht wird über Möglichkeiten, die Schaffung von menschenzuträglichem Raum neu zu beherrschen, liefert diese Studie Dennkanstöße. Die Rückgewinnung des Erzählerischen als Methode könnte dabei helfen, den Faden aufzunehmen, die Stadt auf ihrem Weg nach der Suche von Wahrheit zurück zu führen.

The more intensively we exploit the urban and rural landscape, the greater the demands we place on our environment and what it can provide. Demographic change, shrinking cities, urban expansion, climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources are confronting us with challenges of ever greater magnitude. Solar fields and bio-energy crops are changing the face of the landscape and new traffic and energy infrastructure criss-crosses the countryside. Meanwhile, vast efforts are being made to adapt existing infrastructure to meet changing demands. In the process, it has once again become clear that we must consider our use of natural resources not just from a local perspective but within a broader context. Guided by the multifaceted relations between city and text, Charting Literary Urban Studies: Texts as Models of and for the City attempts to chart the burgeoning field of literary urban studies by outlining how texts in varying degrees function as both representations of the city and as blueprints for its future development. The study addresses questions such as these: How do literary texts represent urban complexities – and how can they capture the uniqueness of a given city? How do literary texts simulate layers of urban memory – and how can they reinforce or help dissolve path dependencies in urban development? What role can literary studies play in interdisciplinary urban research? Are the blueprints or 'recipes' for urban development that most quickly travel around the globe – such as the 'creative city', the 'green city' or the 'smart city' – really always the ones that best solve a given problem? Or is the global spread of such travelling urban models not least a matter of their narrative packaging? There is no poetry without memory. Recovery and Transgression: Memory in American Poetry is devoted to the ways in which poetic texts shape, and are shaped by, personal, collective, and cultural memory. It looks at the manifold and often transgressive techniques through which the past is recovered and repurposed in poetry. T.S. Understanding Complex Urban Systems takes as its point of departure the insight that the challenges of global urbanization and the complexity of urban systems cannot be understood – let alone ‘managed’ – by sectoral and disciplinary approaches alone.
