Schoolteachers and the Nordic Model examines the cultural distinctiveness of the Nordic teaching profession and teacher training compared to examples from Europe and North America. Lange Zeit hindurch entfaltete sich das Bildungswesen in Europa in fast ausschließlicher kirchlicher Zuständigkeit, bis es als gemeinsames Anliegen von Staat und Kirche, von Regierungen und kirchlichen Institutionen in Kooperation wahrgenommen wurde. Die erste umfassendste und tiefgreifendste Organisation ist untrennbar mit den Schulordnungen Habsburgischer Herrscher verbunden, beginnend mit Maria Theresia, die in Reaktion auf ein „Promemoria“ des Passauer Bischofs Leopold Ernst Firmian den Abt des Stiftes Sagan, Ignaz von Felbiger, für die Realisierung ihres wegweisenden Plans gewinnen konnte. Mit ihrer „Allgemeinen Schulordnung“ von 1774 wurde Schulgeschichte geschrieben. Das nachfolgende jahrhundertelange Ringen zwischen Kirche und Staat um die für die nachwachsenden Generationen bestmögliche Gestaltung des Bildungswesens wird in zehn größeren Themenfeldern und einem Ausblick bis in die Gegenwart herauf behandelt, wobei jeder Teil eine relativ geschlossene Einheit bildet. Dabei können weder der gesamte europäische Bereich noch die allgemeine Entwicklung der österreichischen Schule nachgezeichnet, sondern nur jene Berührungs- und zunehmend auch Reibungspunkte thematisiert werden, ohne die das Miteinander von Staat und Kirche (heute: Kirchen und Religionsgesellschaften) nicht wirklich verstehbar wäre. Die Autoren sehen sich mit ihren Publikationen dem Anliegen des großen österreichischen Bildungshistorikers H. Engelbrecht verpflichtet, mit der eigenen pädagogischen Erfahrung und mit dem Wissen um die Geschichte des Schulwesens gegenwärtige Entwicklungen verstehbarer und Weichenstellungen für die Zukunft planbarer zu machen

Ein Beitrag zur Zeitgeschichte der Schule und der westdeutschen Bildungsreform. Leistungssteigerung, Verwissenschaftlichung, sozialer Aufstieg – die Hoffnungen, die in den 1960er Jahren in Hauptschulen gesetzt wurden, waren groß. Die neuen Hauptschulen waren das Ergebnis umfassender Auseinandersetzungen über die Neugestaltung der Volksschule, einer Schulform, die von der überwiegenden Mehrheit der Kinder besucht wurde. Doch was Politiker:innen und Pädagog:innen unterschiedlichster Ausrichtung seit den späten 1950er Jahren umtrieb – von der Auflösung der alten Dorfschule bis zur Einrichtung von Jahrgangsklassen – wird heute kaum noch mit der Bildungsreformära in Verbindung gebracht. Sandra Wenk beleuchtet diesen vergessenen Aspekt der Bildungsreform und verfolgt am Beispiel Nordrhein-Westfalens, wie die Hauptschule nach langen Reformdebatten vom kurzzeitigen bildungspolitischen Vorzeigeprojekt zum Gegenstand umfassender Kritik wurde. Sie betont den grundlegenden Wandel schulischer Bildung sowie die folgenreichen Widersprüche der Reformära, in der dem Individuum neue, aber vielfach ungedeckte Aufstiegs- und Partizipationsversprechen gemacht wurden und sich zugleich die Ansprüche an Schüler:innen und Schulen radikal steigerten.

From 1945 to 1989, relations between the communist East German state and the Catholic Church were contentious and sometimes turbulent. Drawing on extensive Stasi materials and other government and party archives, this study provides the first systematic overview of this complex relationship and offers many new insights into the continuities, changes, and entanglements of policies and strategies on both sides. Previously undiscovered records in church archives contribute to an analysis of regional and sectoral conflicts within the Church and various shades of cooperation between nominal antagonists. The volume also explores relations between the GDR and the Vatican and addresses the oft-neglected communist “church business” controversially made in exchange for hard Western currency.
