Was kennzeichnet einen ?postmodernen Film?? Was unterscheidet ihn vom Hollywood-Kino und macht ihn so besonders?

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Freiburg, course: Monsters, Monstrosoty and Alterity In Fiction and Film, language: English, abstract: The commercial slogan of the biggest power authority in Monstropolis sounds like a common saying that could also be heard in our TV and Radio programmes. And this slogan is not the only odd similarity between our human world and the movieMonsters, Inc.(2001). The movie, one of the latest works developed by Pixar Animation Studios in cooperation with Walt Disney Pictures, is an animated movie for children that sets in a parallel universe, namely a world of monsters: Monstropolis. While this movie was not only extremely successful in the Box office and nominated for an Academy Award in 2002 for Best Animated Feature, there is a lot more to discover beyond its surface. Considering the fact that “Monsters, Inc.” is a movie made for young people, especially for little children (rated TV-G in the US) the film needs to meet some expectations. It is clear that this movie is supposed to be funny, entertaining and suitable for children. At the same time it should be fun for the whole family, not only for the kids, because the parents form the audience that pays for the movie. Additionally, movies for kids are generally expected to fulfil a pedagogical task, as most of Disney’s movies do. There is always the plea for tolerance, equality and kindness in Disney-films, like inMulan, TarzanorThe Beauty and the Beast. The story inMonsters, Inc.however, is set on a much more complex basis than the movies that have been produced by Disney so far. The image of the monster behind closet doors and under the beds of little children - usually rather nightmarish material - is used to create a whole world beyond the scary creatures. This term paper serves to provide a closer look at how the monster is presented in the movie and how this typology can be compared to the common image or stereotype of a monster as well as providing a re-framing of the concept on the basis of monster theory in literature. There will also be a short discussion of how the characters in the movie are adopting human qualities while creating an everyday-life and whether this device is only applied in entertaining the audience. In a final step, there will be an examination on how this fact influences the story in an inverse manner and thus creates a comical and ironic view on the common concepts of a monster.

A designer’s deep dive into seven science fiction films, filled with “gloriously esoteric nerdery [and] observations as witty as they are keen” (Wired). In Typeset in the Future, blogger and designer Dave Addey invites sci-fi movie fans on a journey through seven genre-defining classics, discovering how they create compelling visions of the future through typography and design. The book delves deep into 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Alien, Blade Runner, Total Recall, WALL·E, and Moon, studying the design tricks and inspirations that make each film transcend mere celluloid and become a believable reality. These studies are illustrated by film stills, concept art, type specimens, and ephemera, plus original interviews with Mike Okuda (Star Trek), Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall), and Ralph Eggleston and Craig Foster (Pixar). Typeset in the Future is an obsessively geeky study of how classic sci-fi movies draw us in to their imagined worlds.

The story of how “2001: A Space Odyssey” came to be made is in many ways as epic as the events portrayed in the film itself—and until now, just as mysterious. In 1964, with “Dr. Strangelove” ready for release, Stanley Kubrick was uncertain about what his next project would be, and considered making a film dealing with several contemporary themes. It was only when he encountered Arthur C. Clarke that he decided to make a science fiction film. Yet it took more than four years for “2001: A Space Odyssey” to reach the screen—a productive and creative odyssey that involved experimentation, last-minute rethinks, strokes of genius, quarrels, ultimatums, feats of will, and mental breakdowns. Drawing extensively from never before seen material, including production documents and private correspondences, “2001 between Kubrick and Clarke” gives for the first time a complete account of the two authors’ creative collaboration; one which casts lights on their on-again, off-again relationship, as well as revealing new information about the genesis, production, and reception of the first and most important film about space, the origin of humankind and its destiny among the stars.

A Companion to Fritz Lang “Fritz Lang’s movie-making spans a major part of the history of cinema, across genres, styles, and national contexts. With smartness and sharpness, the essays in this essential volume come from many angles to capture the richness of Lang’s cinema and bring great insight to its study.” Dana Polan, Cinema Studies, NYU Fritz Lang’s influence on cinema cannot be overstated, with a career that stretched from the silent era in Germany to the decline of the Hollywood studio system in the late 1950s, from the Weimar Republic to Nazi Germany, from Depression America to the McCarthy era. One of the best known émigrés from Germany’s school of Expressionism, Lang is also credited with influencing the emergence of film noir. A Companion to Fritz Lang offers the first full-scale collection of scholarship available in English on one of the most important filmmakers of all time. Addressing much of Lang’s voluminous body of work, from Metropolis and M, to lesser-known titles such as Western Union and Clash by Night, this volume offers a superb overview of Lang’s cinema with revealing insights into his enduring influence on directors such as Godard, Scorsese, Chabrol, and Tarantino. The two dozen essays presented here are an unrivaled and up-to-the-minute assessment of the prolific and resilient life and vision of one of cinema’s greatest auteurs.

Space Odyssey written by Michael Benson and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-03 with Performing Arts categories.

The definitive story of the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey, acclaimed today as one of the greatest films ever made, and of director Stanley Kubrick and writer Arthur C. Clarke—“a tremendous explication of a tremendous film….Breathtaking” (TheWashington Post). Fifty years ago a strikingly original film had its premiere. Still acclaimed as one of the most remarkable and important motion pictures ever made, 2001: A Space Odyssey depicted the first contacts between humanity and extraterrestrial intelligence. The movie was the product of a singular collaboration between Stanley Kubrick and science fiction visionary Arthur C. Clarke. Fresh off the success of his cold war satire Dr. Strangelove, Kubrick wanted to make the first truly first-rate science fiction film. Drawing from Clarke’s ideas and with one of the author’s short stories as the initial inspiration, their bold vision benefited from pioneering special effects that still look extraordinary today, even in an age of computer-generated images. In Space Odyssey, author, artist, and award-winning filmmaker Michael Benson “delivers expert inside stuff” (San Francisco Chronicle) from his extensive research of Kubrick’s and Clarke’s archives. He has had the cooperation of Kubrick’s widow, Christiane, and interviewed most of the key people still alive who worked on the film. Drawing also from other previously unpublished interviews, Space Odyssey provides a 360-degree view of the film from its genesis to its legacy, including many previously untold stories. And it features dozens of photos from the making of the film, most never previously published. “At last! The dense, intense, detailed, and authoritative saga of the making of the greatest motion picture I’ve ever seen…Michael Benson has done the Cosmos a great service” (Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks).

This book charts the dimensions of one of the most popular genres in the cinema. From lurid comic-book blockbusters to dark dystopian visions, science fiction is seen as both a powerful cultural barometer of our times and the product of particular industrial and commercial frameworks. The authors outline the major themes of the genre, from representations of the mad scientist and computer hacker to the relationship between science fiction and postmodernism, exploring issues such as the meaning of special effects and the influence of science fiction cinema on the entertainment media of the digital age. Over one hundred films are discussed and the book concludes with an extensive case study of Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace.
