Jahrhundert ist es eine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass die Kultur und Kunst von riesigen Konzernen bereitgestellt wird. Kultur und Kunst sind zum einen wichtigen Teil des Alltags in den westlich-kapitalistischen Gesellschaften geworden. Die Kulturindustrie ist heute zu einem A priori geworden, das selten oder nie in Frage gestellt wird. Alle Sphären der Kulturindustrie werden geforscht, die Menschen werden zu unterschiedlichsten Themen aus dem Bereich der Kulturindustrie befragt. Aber es scheint, dass niemand die Frage stellt, wie und warum die Kulturindustrie überhaupt entstanden ist und warum wir sie brauchen? Oder, mit anderen Worten - ob wir sie überhaupt brauchen? Dann stellt sich logischerweise die Frage - wie hätten das Leben und die Gesellschaft ohne die Kulturindustrie ausgeschaut? Zu Adornos Zeiten war die Kulturindustrie allerdings ein völlig neues Phänomen, das auch einen neuen wissenschaftlichen Diskurs nach sich zog. Adornos Hauptbeschäftigung im Rahmen der Soziologie war gerade das Phänomen der Kulturindustrie. Er "verfolgte" die Kulturindustrie von ihrer Entstehung bis zu seinem Tod 1969. Seit damals gab es natürlich viele und große Veränderungen im Bereich der Kulturindustrie und die Behauptung, dass die schon über 35 Jahre alte Theorie der Kulturindustrie von Adorno obsolet geworden ist, ist mehr oder weniger verständlich und gerechtfertigt. Eine Tatsache steht allerdings fest. Adorno war der erste, der sich sehr umfangreich mit der Kulturindustrie und ihren Auswirkungen auf die Menschen beschäftigte. Seine Theorie ist daher die Basis vieler anderer Theorien und hat deshalb einen besonderen Stellenwert im kulturindustriellen Diskurs. Jahrhunderts eindringlich dar. Sie gehen dabei äußerst präzise vor und binden verschiedenste Themen in ihre Argumentation mit ein. Beispielsweise befassen sie sich mit dem Mythos des Odysseus und der Entwicklung der Kulturindustrie, aber auch mit dem Themenkomplex des Antisemitismus. Das Werk zeichnet sich durch einen stark essayistischen Schreibstil aus, dem die beiden Autoren bis zum Schluss treu bleiben. Die erläuterten Aspekte decken ein breites thematisches Spektrum ab, wodurch auf den ersten Blick nur wenige Parallelen zwischen den einzelnen Themen bestehen. Als tragende Verbindungselemente fungieren hierbei die Thematisierung der Gesellschaft sowie deren Verhältnis zur Aufklärung. In dieser Seminararbeit wird der zentrale Fokus nun auf dem Kapitel der Kulturindustrie liegen. Es soll erläutert werden, wodurch sich die Kulturtheorie von Adorno und Horkheimer im Kern auszeichnet. Zudem wird diese Theorie schließlich auf ihre Aktualität hin untersucht. Hierbei gilt es zu beachten, den historischen Kontext stets in die Analyse mit einzubinden. Zu ihrer Entstehungszeit befand sich Deutschland inmitten des zweiten Weltkriegs, was in der Argumentation der Thesen immer wieder erkennbar wird. Der fragmentarische Stil des Werkes soll in dieser Arbeit weitergeführt werden, um eine tiefere hermeneutische Ebene zu gewährleisten. Besonders im Rahmen der Untersuchung über die Aktualität der Theorie werden bedeutende Aspekte herausgenommen und essayistisch kommentiert.

Adornos Theorie der Kulturindustrie. Sie ist nicht zu denken ohne den Kunstbegriff Adornos. Kunst und Kulturindustrie sind dialektisch und damit schicksalshaft miteinander verknüpft: Ein Aufstieg der Unterhaltung bedeutet den Untergang der Kunst. Die grundsätzliche Trennung von Kunst und Unterhaltung, ihre Konstruktion als Gegensatzpaar ist eine grunddeutsche Erscheinung, die ihre schärfste Ausprägung in Adornos „Ästhetischer Theorie“ und in dessen Theorie der Kulturindustrie gefunden hat. Diese Betrachtungsweise der Kunst entspringt einem Argumentationsschema von Bildung und Kultur, das dem Selbstverständnis des deutschen Bildungsbürgertums des 19. Jahrhunderts in Abgrenzung zum Wirtschaftsbürgertum entspricht. Theodor W. Adorno ist ein Epigone dieser Tradition und feiert die Kunst als Meisterwerk (Werkskunst), obwohl spätestens seit dem Dadaismus die Kunst auch zum Ereignis wurde, die eine Beteiligung des Publikums jenseits distanzierter und gelehrter Betrachtung mitdachte. Dennoch ist Adornos Schema einer zweckfreien und meisterlichen Kunst fester Bestandteil des Selbstverständnisses der Kunst, gerade wenn unter neoliberalen ökonomischen Bedingungen der Legitimationsdruck für ihre Verwertungslosigkeit steigt, und auch wenn Kunst im Zuge ihrer Ausdifferenzierung interaktiv und teilweise populär geworden ist. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Dichotomie zwischen Kunst und Unterhaltung bei Adorno, die Verflochtenheit des normativen Verständnisses von Kunst und Adornos Kulturindustriebegriff kritisch darzustellen. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werde ich den Kulturindustriebegriff Adornos definitorisch umreißen. Der zweite Teil ergänzt die Erscheinung der Kulturindustrie mit Adornos normativen Kunstbegriff, als dessen Gegenbild anschließend die Theorie der Kulturindustrie an Hand der Charakteristika kulturindustrieller Produkte und ihrer Ideologien operationalisiert und vor ihrem gesellschaftstheoretischen Hintergrund als verfallstheoretische Bewusstseinstheorie dargestellt wird (dritter Teil).
