Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Forschung und Studien, Note: 2,3, Universität zu Köln (The, Fi, Fe ), Veranstaltung: Ansätze der Massenkommunikationsforschung, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Theorie der Schweigespirale hat Ihren empirischen Ursprung in den anfangs nicht erklärlichen Umfrageergebnissen im Vorfeld der Bundestagswahl des Jahres 1965. Hier handelt es sich um ein Konzept von öffentlicher Meinung, dass man am besten als Makrotheorie bezeichnen kann. Die breite Fächerung des Themas in verschiedene Bereiche der Wissenschaft bringt eine große Fülle an Literatur mit sich, die gleichzeitig Chance und Problematik bei der Auswahl von Lektüre bedeutet. Eine weitere Schwierigkeit stellt die Tatsache dar, dass die Theorie sich innerhalb der letzten 20 Jahre ständig weiterentwickelt hat und somit ein Überblick über die Thematik erschwert wird. Was jedoch bei der Literaturrecherche am schnellsten ins Auge fällt ist der große Anteil von kritischer Literatur zum Thema. Deshalb soll es Ziel der folgenden Arbeit sein, zu Beginn die Grundzüge der Theorie darzustellen, um sie danach kritisch beleuchten zu können. Die Grundzüge der Theorie beinhaltet methodische, wie inhaltliche Aspekte; und ebenso wird auch in der Kritik zwischen Methodik und Inhalt unterschieden werden. Um den Rahmen des Textes in Grenzen zu halten, wird Elisabeth Noelle-Neumanns geschichtsphilosophische Forschung nur am Rande erwähnt werden, obwohl sie einen relativ hohen Standpunkt im Bereich ihrer Forschung hat. Ebenfalls wird der Begriff der Öffentlichkeit und die Rolle der Massenmedien nur in Grundzügen erläutert werden. Obgleich bekannt ist, dass die Rezeption des Themas beispielweise in den USA anders als in Deutschland zu sehen ist, beschränkt sich der Inhalt, der in dieser Arbeit verwendeten Diskussion, auf nationale Literatur.
