Nazi concentration camps (KZs) were established in the vicinity of local communities across Europe. Arguably, the individuals in these communities were not perpetrators, nor were they victims, like those imprisoned in the camps. Yet they did not simply stand by on the sidelines, passive, uninvolved, or untouched by the presence of the camps. Local citizenries engaged in ambiguous and highly interactive relations with their local camps, willingly and unwillingly working for the perpetrators—but also aiding inmates. After the war, Nazi camps were often repurposed, initially as post-war internment camps and subsequently as penal institutions, military compounds, or housing encampments. Over time, many were transformed into sites of memory to commemorate Nazi persecution. Governments and groups of survivors have often determined the re-use and commemoration of KZs, but these processes take place on local territory and have direct implications for nearby communities. Therefore, locals have continued to interact with camp legacies. Nazi Camps and their Neighbouring Communities examines how local populations evolved to live with the Nazi camps both before and after the war. Helen J. Whatmore-Thomson evaluates the different sorts of locality-camp relationships that developed in wartime France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and how these played out in post-war scenarios of re-use and memorialization. Using three case studies of major camps in western Europe, Natzweiler-Struthof, Neuengamme, and Vught, the book traces the contested developments of these camp sites in the changing political climates of the post-war years, and explores the interrelated dynamics and trajectories of local and national memory.

This series presents for the first time an interdisciplinary contextualization of the productive acquisitions and transformations of the arts and sciences of Antiquity in the slow process of the European societies constructing a scientific system and their own cultural identity, a process which started in the Middle Ages and has continued up to the Modern Age. The series is a product of work in the Collaborative Research Centre "Transformations of Antiquity" and the "August Boeckh Centre of Antiquity" at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Their individual projects examine transformational processes on three levels in particular ‒ the constitutive function of Antiquity in the formation of the European knowledge society, the role of Antiquity in the genesis of modern cultural identities and self-constructions, and the forms of reception in art, literature, translation and media.

Camps as a global and ubiquitous mass phenomenon of the present and a flexible isolation tool for/against specific socially, politically, or ethnically defined groups are at the centre of current policies and societal debates. Das Lager vorstellen rekonstruiert die Architektur der nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslager in Bełżec, Sobibór und Treblinka. In deren Gaskammern wurden zwischen Frühjahr 1942 und Herbst 1943 mindestens 1,7 Millionen Jüdinnen und Juden ermordet. Bei den Lagern handelte sich um bauliche Strukturen, die einzig zum Zweck der massenhaften Tötung von Menschen errichtet wurden. Das Buch schlägt eine Typologie dieser singulären Bauaufgabe vor, indem architekturmorphologische Kategorien systematisch in ihrer historischen Genese, in ihrer Stellung in der Erinnerung und in Bezug auf die Symbolbildung des Holocaust untersucht werden. Dafür wird der Architekturbegriff in zweifacher Hinsicht erweitert. Unter Bezugnahme auf raumtheoretische Forschungsansätze wird die Lagerarchitektur analysiert. Zudem wird die Architekturgeschichte in eine Symbolgeschichte fortgeschrieben. Annika Wienert wertet in diesem Zusammenhang heterogene Quellenbestände aus, um den permanenten Um-, Aus- und Rückbau in den Blick zu nehmen. Ihr besonderes Augenmerk gilt den an die Architektur gebundenen sozialen Realitäten. Verschiedene Ebenen der Vorstellung werden analytisch unterschieden und theoretisch-methodisch reflektiert, um in der Zusammenführung eine möglichst komplexe Reflexion über den Untersuchungsgegenstand zu liefern, dem sich nicht als materiellem Objekt, sondern immer nur vermittelt angenähert werden kann. Im Zentrum stehen dabei die Zeugnisse der wenigen Überlebenden. Ihnen in ihrer Detailliertheit Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen, ist eine Konsequenz, die sich aus dem Bewusstsein gerade der Grenzen der Annäherung ergibt.
