Folgt man der traditionalen Mikroökonomie, ist die Unternehmung durch eine Produktionsfunktion repräsentiert, die eine dem unternehmerischen Handeln vorausgesetzte Input- und Outputbeziehung darstellt. Dieses Idealbild der Unternehmung, in der alle Faktoren harmonisch zusammenwirken, in der die Effizienz garantiert erscheint und keine sozialen Konflikte mehr auftreten können, gilt allerdings nur unter einer zentralen Voraussetzung, nämlich der, daß der betriebliche Leistungsprozeß primär als ein technisch determinierter Prozeß aufgefaßt wird und alle Faktoren in einer Weise fungieren, als ob sie technische Faktoren wären. Anders verhält es sich, wenn das Unternehmen nicht nur als ein technisches, sondern auch als ein soziales System interpretiert wird, wenn also auf die Eigentümlichkeit des »lebendigen« Produktionsfaktors, der im Unternehmen arbeitenden Menschen, abgestellt wird.Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie besteht darin, das Verständnis der Unternehmung als einem sozialen System zu vertiefen, das durch konfligierende Interessen, strategisches Konflikt- und Kooperationsverhalten der am betrieblichen Leistungsprozeß beteiligten Akteure und durch latente Macht- und Informationsasymmetrien charakterisiert ist. Diese Perspektive erfordert eine differenzierte Analyse menschlicher Ziele, Bewertungen und Interaktionen, die einen Zugriff auf arbeits- und sozialpsychologische, arbeitsrechtliche und sozialökonomische Forschungsresultate erfordert. Aus diesem Grund wendet sich das Buch auch nicht nur an Fachökonomen, sondern gleichermaßen auch an Arbeits- und Organisationspsychologen, Arbeits- und Betriebssoziologen und Juristen.

German economic history in the industrial age has classically formed an important basis for the study of economic growth and industrialisation more generally. This book aims to introduce English-language readers to modern German economic history based on a selection of work by one of Germany's leading economic and business historians, Werner Plumpe, who places particular emphasis on the institutional structure of the economy. Plumpe's work demonstrates that the country's economic evolution can only be understood by paying close attention to institutional peculiarities, such as the shape of industrial relations and the dynamics of corporate decision-making. It also emphasises the importance of the interconnectedness of capital and labour in the German coordinated market economy and draws attention to individual events and decisions that may have driven long-term economic development, but are rarely considered in approaches that deal primarily with macroeconomic growth. German Economic and Business History in the 19th and 20th Century shows that Germany's economic history still warrants the application of an institutional view of economic transformation that is slightly different from the more formal perspectives dominant in the UK and the US. This book deals with the inner life of the capitalist firm. There we find numerous conflicts, the most important of which concerns the individual employment relationship which is understood as a principal-agent problem between the manager, the principal, who issues orders that are to be followed by the employee, the agent. Whereas economic theory traditionally analyses this relationship from a (normative) perspective of the firm in order to support the manager in finding ways to influence the behavior of the employees, such that the latter – ideally – act on behalf of their superior, this book takes a neutral stance. It focusses on explaining individual behavioral patterns and the resulting interactions between the actors in the firm by taking sociological, institutional, and above all, psychological research into consideration. In doing so, insights are gained which challenge many assertions economists take for granted.

Dabei wurden gleicher maßen von Praxis und Theorie im Rahmen einer großen Anzahl von Wissen schaften umfangreiche Anstrengungen unternommen. Betrachtet man die soziologisch-gesellschaftlichen, politischen, ökonomischen und technologischen Bedingungen, unter denen soziale Einheiten rational ihre Aufgaben zu erfül len haben, so scheint die Vielfalt der Bemühungen durchaus verständlich: Die AufgabensteIlung sozialer Systeme ist ständig komplexer, ihre Verände rungsgeschwindigkeit größer geworden; der Mensch als Träger der Aufgaben erfüllung stellt zunehmend und weitgehend veränderte Anforderungen an seine Mitarbeit im System; die Sachmittel ermöglichen dem Menschen eine wachsende Entlastung von bestimmten Aufgaben, beinhalten jedoch zugleich Probleme eigener Art. Derart erschwerte Bedingungen werfen die Frage nach Hilfsmitteln auf, die bei der Führung sozialer Einheiten zur Bewälti gung der Aufgaben zur Verfügung gestellt werden können oder bereits zur Verfügung stehen. Von ihnen wird es letztlich abhängen, ob und in welcher Form die sozialen Einheiten ihre Aufgaben auch in der Zukunft werden er füllen können. Unter diesen Hilfsmitteln nimmt die Gestaltung der Organi sation und der Führung unter systemtheoretischen Aspekten einen wesent lichen Platz ein. Die mit dem vorliegenden Werk eingeleitete Schriftenreihe will dieser Frage stellung nachgehen. Past experience has shown that especially small and medium sized businesses had not prepared themselves well enough for the turbulent and discontinuous environmental changes. Looking at globalization and the present economical recession, the pressure on small and medium sized businesses rises continually. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the entirety of medium sized businesses play a vital role with respect to macroeconomics. The few empirical examinations on the status quo concerning the application of business-management methods, in particular application of planning systems in small and medium sized businesses make it clear that systematic planning and application of business-management methods in those enterprises is insufficient. In particular enterprises with a turnover of up to 10 m. Euro have shown considerable deficits regarding the application of business-management methods used for running an enterprise.
