After over half a century of secrecy, a Swiss bank safe was opened, it contained the long-lost research notes of Josef Mengele, as well as those of his chief assistant in Auschwitz. They had been deposited there by the assistant who himself had been a Jewish doctor. Sent to Auschwitz, he was forced to participate in Josef Mengeles gruesome human experiments. Following the war, he completely disappeared, assuming a new identity and shrouding himself in silence. He did write his story down, but ordered the documents to be sealed away until decades after his death. With the release date drawing closer, his granddaughter, a well-connected Vatican doctor, wanted to have the documents examined by a professional historian. Thus, a great investigation was launched to track him down and pin down his place in the medical system in Auschwitz and the horrendous medical experiments conducted there. However, after some time, doubts regarding the authenticity of the documents began to emerge. Thus, what promised to be a sensational historical breakthrough, soon turned into a criminal investigation into one of the greatest historical fraud attempts in recent decades. At the end of the second investigation, the person behind the forged documents was brought to trial and sentenced on 22 counts of fraud. This book thoroughly examines the way the fraud evolved over the span of three decades and how it succeeded in convincing so many people, while also comparing it to other historic hoaxes, particularly those concerning the Holocaust.

Josef Mengele ist zu einer weltweit bekannten Symbolfigur für die Menschenversuche im Dritten Reich geworden. Oft wird allerdings der Eindruck erweckt, Mengele habe wahllos Eingriffe an Häftlingen vorgenommen, die jeder wissenschaftlichen Grundlage entbehrten. Dabei wird übersehen, dass Mengele in Kontakt mit Wissenschaftlern außerhalb des Lagers stand und teilweise in deren Auftrag handelte. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht diese Zusammenhänge. Es ist mit erheblichen Schwierigkeiten verbunden, Mengeles Versuche und seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem KWI zu rekonstruieren, da nahezu der gesamte Schriftverkehr hierzu vernichtet worden ist. Neben einem zufälligen Verlust von Dokumenten durch den Krieg wurde Korrespondenz auch gezielt zerstört. Erst durch die Einbeziehung von Zeugenaussagen und Sekundärquellen ergibt sich schließlich ein Gesamtbild. Die vorliegende Arbeit fasst zunächst Mengeles Lebensweg zusammen, um so den vielen legendenhaften Darstellungen, die sich in den Medien zu seiner Person finden, eine Rekonstruktion der Fakten entgegenzusetzen. Auch die Entwicklung des Kaiser-Wilhelm-Instituts, die Entstehung der neuen akademischen Fächer ‘Rassenkunde’ und ‘Eugenik’ sowie die Rolle von Mengeles Doktorvater Otmar von Verschuer werden kurz betrachtet. Mengeles Versuche in Auschwitz werden im Hauptteil der Arbeit systematisch dargestellt: Zwillingsversuche, die Projekte ‘Spezifische Eiweißkörper’, ‘Tuberkulose’ und ‘Augenfarbe’. Mengele nahm auch Versuche vor, die wohl seiner eigenen Weiterbildung dienen sollten, und sammelte körperliche Anomalien. Wo immer sich aus den Quellen Hinweise auf eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem KWI ergeben, werden diese hier genannt. Auch die Frage nach den Ergebnissen von Mengeles Versuchen wird behandelt. Eine Arbeit über den oben genannten Themenkomplex erfordert es, Verbrechen zu beschreiben. Dies wurde allerdings nur in dem Maß getan, in dem es für die Arbeit nötig erschien, um den Leser nicht unnötig zu belasten. Es wurde hierbei eine sachliche, medizinische Terminologie verwendet.

This book seeks to remedy the marginalisation, and to place the experiments in the context of the broad history of National Socialism and the Holocaust. Paul Weindling bases this study on the reconstruction of a victim group through individual victims' life histories, and by weaving the victims' experiences collectively together in terms of different groupings, especially gender, ethnicity and religion, age, and nationality. The timing of the experiments, where they occurred, how many victims there were, and who they were, is analysed, as are hitherto under-researched aspects such as Nazi anatomy and executions. The experiments are also linked, more broadly, to major elements in the dynamic and fluid Nazi power structure and the implementation of racial policies.
