Ohne die letztere, fällt es schwer, Prozesse and Probleme einer Stadt oder eines Raumes zu verstehen. Rückblickend auf die Stadtentwicklung und ihre „Vergangenheit wird auch die gegebenenfalls notwendige zukünftige Planung objektiver“ (CERDA ILDEFONSO, 1867, S.10FF.). Wie schon in der Einleitung definiert, der Begriff villes nouvelles wird synonym mit dem der „neuen Städte“ verwendet. Es handelt sich nicht um ein Phänomen oder eine Idee, die ihre Umsetzung nur in Frankreich fanden, sondern viel mehr, wie man dieser Arbeit entnehmen kann, um eine eigene Umsetzung, bei der die Instrumente sowie Gestaltung dieser Städte merklich von anderen Realisierungen unterscheidet und zu Entstehung der französischen villes nouvelles (etwas wie eine appellation d’origine) geführt hat. Die Unterschiede zu den new towns in Großbritannien oder sozialistische Stadt in der Sowjetunion, oder andere Formen in Ägypten, Brasilien, Skandinavien oder den Vereinigten Staaten sind vorgegeben. Dass die Planung aller dieser „neuen Städte" weltweit von bestimmten Ideen oder Theorien nachhaltig beeinflusst wurde, kann man weiter in diesem Kapitel verfolgen. Nach dem DICTIONNAIRE DE L’URBANISME ET DE L’AMÉNAGEMENT als ville nouvelle gilt „die geplante Stadt, deren Realisierung von der öffentlichen Hand im vorgegebenen Rahmen einer Raumordnungspolitik durchgeführt wird“ (MERLIN P. & F. CHOAY, 2000, S. 886). Die villes nouvelles waren „konzeptionell sehr stark von den new towns in Großbritannien und den neugegründeten Städten in Skandinavien beeinflusst“ (PIERRE MERLIN, 1997, S. 11). Auch in Planungen in der Sowjetunion hatten die französischen Planer einen Blick hineingeworfen. Der gemeinsame Nenner mit der letzteren war die Industrialisierung, die Bildung von neuen Industriestandorten und gleichzeitig neue integrierte städtebauliche Konzepte gefordert hat. In Frankreich ist nicht nur die Industrialisierung später als in den anderen westeuropäischen und nordamerikanischen Ländern eingetroffen, sondern leider auch die Erkenntnis, eine umfassende Raum- und Stadtplanung zu betreiben. The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

This is the first English translation of the seminal book by Katharina Reiß and Hans Vermeer, Grundlegung einer allgemeinen Translationstheorie, first published in 1984. Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence is the first extensive history of Cameroonian nationalism to consider the global and local influences that shaped the movement within the French and British Cameroons and beyond. Drawing on the archives of the United Nations, France, Great Britain, Ghana, and Cameroon, as well as oral sources, Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence chronicles the spread of the Union des populations du Cameroun (UPC) nationalist movement from the late 1940s into the first postcolonial decade. It shows how, in the French and British Cameroon territories administered as UN Trusteeships after the Second World War, notions of international human rights, the promise of Third World independence, Pan-African federation, and national citizenship blended with local political and spiritual practices that resurfaced as the period of European rule came to a close. After French and British administrators banned the party in the mid-1950s, UPC nationalists adopted violence as a revolutionary strategy. In the 1960s, the nationalist vision disintegrated. The postcolonial regime labeled UPC nationalists “outlaws” and rounded them up for imprisonment or execution as the state shifted to single-party rule in 1966. Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence traces the connection between local and transregional politics in the age of Africa’s decolonization and the early decades of the Cold War. Rather than stop at official independence as most conventional histories of African nationalist movements do, this book considers postindependence events as crucial to the history of Cameroonian nationalism and to an understanding of the postcolonial government that came to power on 1 January 1960. While the history of the UPC is a story that ends with the party’s failure to gain access to political power with independence, it is also a story of the postcolonial state’s failure to become a nation.

Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment is the first publication in any language of the only book devoted to architecture by Henri Lefebvre.
