Die Zukunft des internationalen Systems wird deshalb entscheidend vom amerikanisch- chinesischem Verhältnis abhängen. In der folgenden Arbeit soll dieses Verhältnis untersucht und bewertet werden. Dazu wird zunächst das Verhältnis der beiden Mächte seit ihrer gemeinsamen Existenz charakterisiert, dann werden Ursachen und Gründe für die Ambivalenz der Zusammenarbeit dargestellt, um letztlich eine Bewertung der heutigen allgemeinen sino- amerikanischen Beziehung vornehmen zu können. Das Resümee wird am Ende die Untersuchungsergebnisse bewerten und einen Ausblick in die Zukunft der Beziehung wagen. Der wohl auffälligste Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der historischen Entwicklung. In diesem Rückblick offenbaren sich Parameter und Voraussetzungen gemeinsamer Zusammenarbeit, sowie Kooperationstechniken und Konfliktbewältigungsstrukturen, die auch für die gegenwärtige Beziehung prägend sind. Des Weiteren ist die VR China und ihre Stellung in dem jeweiligen Untersuchungsbereich bewußt stärker beleuchtet worden, um die jeweiligen Ursachen für die Verhältnischarakteristik deutlich zu machen.
