The Great Exhibition of 1851 is routinely portrayed as a manifestly secular event which was confined to celebrating the success of science, technology, and manufacturing in the mid-Victorian age. Geoffrey Cantor presents an innovative reappraisal of the Exhibition, demonstrating that it was widely understood by contemporaries to possess a religious dimension and that it generated controversy among religious groups. Prince Albert bestowed legitimacy on the Exhibition by proclaiming it to be a display of divine providence whilst others interpreted it as a sign of the coming Apocalypse. With anti-Catholic feeling running high following the recent 'papal aggression', many Protestants roundly condemned those exhibits associated with Catholicism and some even denounced the Exhibition as a Papist plot. Catholics, for their part, criticized the Exhibition as a further example of religious repression. Several evangelical religious organisations energetically rose to the occasion, considering the Exhibition to be a divinely ordained opportunity to make converts, especially among 'heathens' and foreigners. Jews generally welcomed the Exhibition, as did Unitarians, Quakers, Congregationalists, and a wide spectrum of Anglicans - but all for different reasons. Cantor explores this diversity of perception through contemporary sermons, and, most importantly, the highly differentiated religious press. Taken all together these religious responses to the Exhibition shed fresh light on a crucial mid-century event.

From the moment it opened on the first of May in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, the Great Exhibition of 1851 was one of the defining events of the Victorian period. It stood not only as a visible symbol of British industrial and technological progress but as a figure for modernity--a figure that has often been thought to convey one coherent message and vision of culture and society. This volume examines the place occupied both materially and discursively by the Crystal Palace and other nineteenth- and twentieth-century exhibitions in the struggle to understand what it means to be modern. Initiated in part by a number of conferences held in 2001 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Crystal Palace, Victorian Prism provides new perspectives to historians, literary critics, art historians, and others interested in how a large glass building in a London park could refract meaning from Caracas to Calcutta. Material Theories takes a radically new approach to well-established thinking on nineteenth-century architecture and design by investigating Gottfried Semper’s classic ideas about dressing, metamorphosis of material, and cultural development, culminating in his two-volume publication Style. This book demonstrates how Semper’s theories crystallised among his encounters with material things of the late 1840s and early 1850s. It examines several discursive frameworks and phenomena which shaped the attitude to artefacts in Europe in the mid-nineteenth century, and which were specifically pertinent to Semper’s evolution: archaeology and antiquarianism, the domestic interior, print media, collections, and the embodied relationship between the designer and their work. For the first time, this book examines the construction of a design theory not only as an intellectual endeavour but also as a process of confrontation with material things. It employs recent approaches to material culture, in particular Thing Theory, in order to show that Semper’s artefact references constituted his ideas, rather than simply giving impetus to them. It will be an important investigation for academics and researchers interested in interior design history, as well as scholars of material culture and history of design theory.

Hierbei wird der Schwerpunkt auf der weltweit ersten Weltausstellung im Jahre 1851 in London liegen. Ich werde insbesondere auf ihre Vorgeschichte und auf die Grundidee einer internationalen Ausstellung, in der alle Länder der Erde als Teilnehmer eingeladen sind. Die erste Weltausstellung setzte in vielerlei Hinsicht neue Maßstäbe, wie unter anderem bei den Besucherzahlen und der Anzahl an Ausstellungsobjekten. Überdies wurde das Ausstellungsgebäude, der Kristallpalast, für die nachfolgenden Weltausstellungen zum Vorbild. Durch dieses Gebäude wurde ein Wettstreit entfacht, mit dem Ziel ein besseres Gebäude zu bauen, um den Crystal Palace in den Schatten zu stellen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden die Ziele und der Zweck der Ausstellung beleuchtet. Im zweiten Teil der Ausarbeitung richtet sich der Fokus auf die zweite in England stattfindende Weltausstellung im Jahr 1862. Diese wurde von diversen Problemen, wie beispielsweise dem Tod von Prinz Albert, der als geistiger Vater der Weltausstellungsidee galt, überschattet. Der Ausstellungspalast spielte ebenfalls im Jahr 1862 eine wichtige Rolle für die Konzeption der Weltausstellung. Weiterhin werden die Hauptziele der Ausstellung in diesem Teil eingehender beschrieben. Zum Schluss werden die Ausstellungen in Großbritannien im 19. Jahrhundert in einigen Punkten gegenübergestellt und miteinander verglichen.
