Using Germany as a national case study, this volume examines the historical genesis of precarity, its evolution from 19th-century industrial modernity to the present, and its reflections and reconfigurations in artistic production, in particular with relation to work, gender, and sexuality. “Precarity is everywhere now,” sociologist Pierre Bourdieu declared almost thirty years ago. Not only declining middle-class standards of living, but also debt, drug addiction, housing and food insecurity, depression, and “deaths of despair” are now being recognized as symptoms of the downward pull of social precarity. Although these and similar ills have been attributed to neoliberal policies of deregulation, privatization, and willful neglect of the common good, precarization has accompanied the booms and busts of industrial modernity from its beginnings. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film explores how German and Austrian literature, film, and social history have engaged with social precarity, from the period of Romanticism and early industrialization to the present. The chapters in this volume deal with precarity as both an objective phenomenon reflected in literary and filmic representations and as a subjective phenomenon that gives these representations their particular shape. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film opens new critical perspectives on diverse forms of lived precarity and their creative manifestations by reflecting on the history of capitalist modernity from the vantage points of weakness, vulnerability, marginality, impoverishment, and otherness.

Among the avant-garde of the early twentieth century, the German movement remains one of the least understood in the current avant-garde and modernism debates. Rainer Rumold fills this gap with a first large-scale reassessment of the heyday and afterlife of German expressionist and Dada productions as a prolonged crisis of literary culture. Mapping avant-garde activity in Germany in a series of critical constellations from roughly 1918 to the post-World War II period, Rumold divides its history into three phases: the revolt of contradictory discourses in the teens and twenties; the conservative reversal vs. a radicalized anti-art stance of the avant-garde in exile; and the post-avant-garde. The latter is viewed as a unique step toward the postmodern represented in the late (postfascist) work of the once-radical expressionist Gottfried Benn and that of the neo-avant-gardists Helmut Heissenbuttel and Hans Magnus Enzensberger. In this volume 19 scholars from different generations, different national contexts and with different relationships to Marxism reflect on the status of 18 "keywords" with special pertinence to Marxist art-historical inquiry today. Starting point of the researches was the knowledge that while certain keywords have been crucial to recent developments in Marxist art history and cultural theory more broadly, others seem to have slipped out of view. The scholars are not so much interested in the "historical semantics" of words – although that plays some role in the essays – as in the present state of Marxist art history.

Als in der deutschen Spätaufklärung ›Anthropologie‹ und Ästhetik eine enge Allianz eingehen, stürzt dies eine alte Gattung in die Krise, die nun zum anti-anthropologischen Textmuster schlechthin avanciert: die ›literarische Utopie‹. Fiktionale Texte über Gesellschaften vernunftautonomer Individuen widersprechen jenem neuen Menschenbild, das die Macht körperlicher Konditionen über das Denken und Handeln betont. Gerade wegen ihres zweifelhaften Rufs bietet die ›literarische Utopie‹ aber zugleich Gelegenheit, die ›Anthropologie‹ als problematischen und politisch brisanten Wissensbestand zu reflektieren, hinter dem die Nihilismusgefahr wie ein Gespenst lauert. Untersucht wird daher, wie Autoren der selbstreflexiven Aufklärung und Frühromantik mit diesem Textmuster auf die ›Rehabilitation der Sinnlichkeit‹ und die dadurch verursachten ethischen, theologischen, politischen und ästhetischen Probleme reagieren. Literaturhistorisch diskutiert die Studie am Fall einer Gattung Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten zwischen Spätaufklärung und Frühromantik, systematisch zielt sie auf eine Modellierung von Literatur- und Gattungsgeschichte als Problemgeschichte.
