Die Entstehung der »Islamophobie« wird gemeinhin als Folge des jüngsten radikalen Islamismus gesehen. Demgegenüber belegen kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Analysen, dass antimuslimischer Rassismus bereits lange vorher verbreitet war und in politischen, kulturellen und alltäglichen Diskursen der »westlichen Kultur« verwurzelt ist. Im Unterschied zu interreligiösen Dialogen, die sich bemühen, »das Fremde« zu verstehen und damit der »Islamophobie« begegnen wollen, kehrt dieses Buch die Perspektive um. Der Blick auf »die Anderen« dient als Ausgangspunkt der Betrachtung - nicht, um »das Fremde« zu verstehen, sondern um das »Eigene« reflektieren zu können. Mit Bezug auf postkoloniale und poststrukturalistische Theorien wird die Präsentation »des Islam« als hegemonialer Diskurs analysiert. Demnach ist die Dichotomie zwischen »Islam« und »Westen« eine Konstruktion, die beide essenzialisiert. Sie hat sich historisch entwickelt und transformiert, ihr kommen in politischen Konstellationen unterschiedliche Bedeutungen zu, ihre Facetten sind Teil des kulturellen Wissensbestandes »des Westens« über »den Orient« bzw. »den Islam«. In ihrem Alltag vermitteln sich den Subjekten die Bedingungen und Bedeutungen des »Islamdiskurses« als kulturelle Repräsentationen, die ihnen Sichtweisen und Interpretationen anbieten, nahelegen oder erschweren. In diesem Möglichkeitsraum setzen sich die Subjekte aktiv mit der kulturellen Hegemonie auseinander und positionieren sich darin.

During the first decade of this millennium Germany’s largest ethnic minority—Turkish Germans—began to enjoy a new cultural prominence in German literature, film, television and theater. While controversies around forced marriage and “honor” killings have driven popular interest in the situation of Turkish-German women, popular culture has played a key role in diversifying portrayals of women and men of Turkish heritage. This book documents the significance of marriage in 21st-century Turkish-German culture, unpacking its implications not only for the cultural portrayals of those of Turkish background, but also for understandings of German identity. It sheds light on the interactions of gender, sexuality and ethnicity in contemporary Germany. This book explores four notions of marriage in popular culture: forced marriage; romantic marriage; intercultural marriage; and gay marriage. Over five chapters, the book shows that in popular culture marriage is conventionally portrayed as little more than a form of oppression for Turkish-German women and gay men. The state of Turkish matrimony is seen as characterized by coercion, lack of choice, familial duty and “honor,” even violence. In German culture, by contrast, marriage stands for individual choice, love and equality. However, within comedy genres such as “chick lit”, “ethno-sitcom” and wedding film, there have been attempts to challenge the monolithic power of these gender stereotypes. This study finds that, in grappling with the legacy of these stereotypes, these genres reveal a yearning within German popular culture for the very kinds of “traditional” gender roles Turkish Germans are imagined to inhabit. The book provides a comprehensive account of the multiple ways in which the diverse portrayals of marriage shape views of Turkish Germans in popular culture, and are also revealing of the role of gender in contemporary Germany. It investigates some key genres—autoethnography, chick lit, ethno-sitcom, wedding film, “gay” Bildungsroman, documentary theater—within which questions of gender and cultural difference are “framed”. In new and innovative close readings of literary, filmic, television and dramatic texts, the work reveals the broad significance of cultural portrayals of Turkish-German intimacy.

Germany, who challenged the British and its allies twice in the first half of the 20th century, began to reemerge as a global political power and to play the “big game” in the wake of the Cold War. As the strongest economy and the most crowded country in the European Union (EU), Germany has decided to lead the EU institutions and the old continent in global platforms. Especially after the reunification of the country, Germany started to dominate European politics. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of Cold War politics, Germany prompted the European countries to pursue a more independent foreign policy. Getting rid of the Soviet threat, Germany no longer needs NATO and the U.S. protection. How feminism is used to attack immigration in Europe In recent years, opponents of 'political correctness' have surged to prominence from both left and right, shaping a discourse in which perpetrators are 'defiantly' imagined as Muslim refugees, i.e. outsiders/others, while victims are identified as 'our women'. This book interrogates the patterns and discursive structures that have generated the seeming urgency of Muslims' integration. Focusing on Germany, it problematizes the grounds on which politics of integration are justified and reasoned upon, and thereby investigates divergent operations of power vis-à-vis Muslims and Islam in a formally liberal-secular society. The integration paradigm in Germany has been predicated on an imperial knowledge regime, in which Islam figures as the external friend or enemy of an imagined Christian secular. This book analyzes three kinds of integration practices as symptomatic sites for the multifaceted dimensions of power in this paradigm: the scientific measurement of Muslims' degrees of integration which are correlated with their degrees of religiosity; the politics of recognition promoted by state-organized dialogue with Muslims; and the threat of sanction, found in the regulations of citizenship and explicitly in citizenship tests. Centrally, the book argues that the paradigm of integration navigates between universalist claims and particularistic-racial and religious-re-enactments of a secular nation-state framework at moments in which this very framework is crumbling.
