Matthew Rampley’s The Vienna School of Art History is the first book in over seventy-five years to study in depth and in context the practices of art history from 1847, the year the first teaching position in the discipline was created, to 1918, the collapse of Austria-Hungary. It traces the emergence of art history as a discipline, the establishment of norms of scholarly inquiry, and the involvement of art historians in wider debates about the cultural and political identity of the monarchy. The so-called Vienna School plays the central role in the study, but Rampley also examines the formation of art history elsewhere in Austria-Hungary. Located in the Habsburg imperial capital, Vienna art historians frequently became entangled in debates that were of importance to art historians elsewhere in the Empire, and Rampley pays particular attention to these areas of overlapping interest. He also analyzes the methodological innovations for which the Vienna School was well known. Rampley focuses most fully, however, on the larger political and ideological context of the practice of art history—particularly the way in which art-historical debates served as proxies for wider arguments over the political, social, and cultural life of the Habsburg Empire.

Rechtzeitig zum 500. Todestag von Andrea Mantegna 2006 widmet sich diese Studie seinem Meisterwerk, dem Gemäldezyklus 'Triumph Caesars'. Von Zeitgenossen und nachfolgenden Generationen bewundert, war der 'Triumph' einst Glanzpunkt der märchenhaften Kunstsammlung der Gonzaga in Mantua, erlitt jedoch in den folgenden Jahrhunderten schweren Schaden, sodass die Bilder, die sich heute im Besitz der englischen Königin befinden, nur mehr einen schwachen Abglanz ihrer einstigen Pracht zeigen. Anhand von zwei neu aufgefundenen Kopien nach dem 'Triumph', die hier erstmals vorgestellt werden, ist es nun aber möglich, die unvergleichliche Farbwirkung, die im Original für immer verloren ist, zu rekonstruieren und so dem Publikum dieses Meisterwerk der Renaissance wieder nahe zu bringen. Dazu werden die wichtigsten Aspekte von Mantegnas Zyklus eingehend vorgestellt: z. Using empathy, as established by the Vienna School of Art History, complemented by insights on how the mind processes visual stimuli, as demonstrated by late 19th-century psychologists and art theorists, this book puts forward an innovative interpretative method of decoding the forms and spaces of Modern buildings. This method was first developed as scholars realized that the new abstract art appearing needed to be analysed differently than the previous figurative works. Since architecture experienced a similar development in the 1920s and 30s, this book argues that the empathetic method can also be used in architectural interpretation. While most existing scholarship tends to focus on formal and functional analysis, this book proposes that Modern architecture is too diverse to be reduced to a few common formal or ornamental features. Instead, by relying on the viewer’s innate psycho-physiological perceptive abilities, sensual and intuitive understandings of composition, form, and space are emphasized. These aspects are especially significant because Modern Architecture lacks the traditional stylistic signs. Including building analyses, it shows how, by visually reducing cubical forms and spaces to linear configurations, the exteriors and interiors of Modern buildings can be interpreted via human perceptive abilities as dynamic movement systems commensurate with the new industrial transportation age. This reveals an inner necessity these buildings express about themselves and their culture, rather than just an explanation of how they are assembled and how they should be used. The case studies highlight the contrasts between buildings designed by different architects, rather than concentrating on the few features that relate them to the zeitgeist. It analyses the buildings directly as the objects of study, not indirectly, as designs filtered through a philosophical or theoretical discourse. Am Beispiel des umstrittenen Kunsthistorikers Hans Sedlmayr werden in der vorliegenden Studie textorientierte Zugänge zu diesem Forschungsfeld erprobt. Anhand unveröffentlichter Materialien aus dem Nachlass wird dargestellt, wie Sedlmayr seine Kunstwissenschaft textproduktiv aus Lektüren entwickelt, wie er exzerpiert, zitiert und wie er außerfachliche Denkmodelle textuell adaptiert. Neben der Analyse dieser Textpraktiken und einer fundierten Quellenkritik ermöglichen es die Archivstudien, Sedlmayrs Projekt einer Neulancierung der Kunstwissenschaft zu diskutieren und ausgewählte Publikationen einer fokussierten Re-Lektüre zu unterziehen. Dabei wird exemplarisch gezeigt, welche textuellen Strategien sowie para- und intertextuellen Arrangements im Prozess der Neuformulierung einer Disziplin zum Tragen kommen und wie sich diese unter den unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlich-politischen Konstellationen bis in die 1950er Jahre verändern. Diese Arbeit liefert neue Forschungsgrundlagen zu Hans Sedlmayr und zeigt zugleich Wege auf, wie sich eine Praxeologie der Geisteswissenschaften über einen textorientierten Zugriff entwickeln lässt.
