Der Nationalpark Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer ist der flächengrößte Nationalpark Deutschlands und ausgezeichnet als UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe. Die Nordsee ist ein traditionelles Fremdenverkehrsgebiet, wodurch eine grundlegende konkurrierende Situation zum Naturschutz besteht. Schutzgebiete werden deshalb häufig als Verhinderer einer wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung angesehen. Oft führt das zu mangelnder Akzeptanz bei Anwohnern, Entscheidungs- und Wirtschaftsträgern, was eine regionale Verzahnung des Schutzgebietes erheblich erschwert oder sogar verhindern kann. Was kann in dieser Situation unternommen werden? Seit 20 Jahren wird in Schleswig-Holstein an einer Harmonisierung der Interessen um den Nationalpark gearbeitet. Inhalt des Buches ist es einmal, die Effekte des Nationalparks für dessen Anrainerkreise Nordfriesland und Dithmarschen herauszustellen. Welche Wirkungen und Impulse gehen vom Nationalpark aus? Was bekommen insbesondere die hiesigen Unternehmen davon mit? Weiterhin wird betrachtet, wie und in welchem Umfang der Nationalpark die im Nationalparkgesetz verankerte Zielsetzung umgesetzt hat, die regionale Entwicklung zu fördern. Dafür wurden 2009 Unternehmen in den Anrainerkreisen online nach ihren Einstellungen zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit, zur Geschäftsentwicklung und zu Erfahrungen mit dem Nationalpark befragt. Experteninterviews mit regionalen Akteuren geben weiteren Aufschluss über die Bedeutung des Nationalparks. Es werden Empfehlungen für das Untersuchungsgebiet und für die weitere Forschung daraus abgeleitet.
