Wie Martin Luther und Philipp Melanchthon ubersetzte auch Huldrych Zwingli zusammen mit anderen Gelehrten der Hohen Schule die Bibel aus dem hebraischen und griechischen Urtext ins Deutsche. Im Unterschied zu den Wittenbergern war das Zurcher Ubersetzungswerk funf Jahre vorher (1529) abgeschlossen. Von den zahlreichen Bibeln und Bibelteilen, die seit 1524 bei Christoph Froschauer erschienen sind, gehort die reich illustrierte Foliobibel von 1531 zu den schonsten und wichtigsten Druckwerken der Zeit. Von dieser Ausgabe gibt es weltweit nur noch drei kolorierte Exemplare, eines davon gehort zum Kirchenschatz des Grossmunsters und wurde 2010/2011 aufwendig restauriert. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet die Entstehung der sogenannten Froschauer-Bibel sowie ihre Verbreitung in Europa und Nordamerika und fragt nach der Bedeutung dieser Reformationsbibel im 21. Jahrhundert. Mit Beitragen von Christoph Sigrist, Urs B. Leu, Hans Rudolf Lavater und Markus Keller.

Die Zurcher Bibelubersetzung ist neben der Lutherbibel eine der bedeutsamsten volkssprachlichen Wiedergaben des Bibeltextes in der Reformationszeit und gehort zugleich zu den wichtigsten Sprachdenkmalern der deutschen Schweiz im 16. Die Untersuchung hat ihren Schwerpunkt in einer vergleichenden sprachlich-stilistischen Analyse ausgewahlter Kapitel beider Testamente, wobei der Zurcher Bibel von 1531 die Lutherbibel, der hebraische bzw. griechische Urtext sowie die Septuaginta und Vulgata-Fassung kontrastiv gegenubergestellt werden."

Die Froschauerbibel von 1531 ist ein reformations-, kultur- und sprachgeschichtliches Schlüsseldokument der Reformationszeit. Doch das ungewohnte Schriftbild macht diese Zürcher Bibel in der originalen Ausgabe schwer lesbar. Niklaus Ulrich hat sie deshalb vollständig transkribiert. Nachdem in dieser Transkription bereits das Neue Testament und die Psalmen publiziert worden sind («Jch bin das brot des läbens», 2018), erscheint nun auch das Alte Testament transkribiert. Damit sind auch diese durch Zwingli und weitere Übersetzer aus dem Urtext ins Deutsche übertragenen Texte erstmals als normale Buchausgabe erhältlich. Zum besseren Verständnis der einstigen, schweizerdeutsch anmutenden Sprache Zwinglis ist der Bibeltext von 2007 synoptisch beigegeben. Dem Bibeltext vorangestellt ist die kommentierte Übersetzung des aufschlussreichen Vorworts, in dem Ulrich Zwingli und Leo Jud ihre reformatorisch inspirierte Motivation zur Übersetzungstätigkeit darlegen.

Die Froschauerbibel von 1531 stellt ein besonderes Zeitdokument der schweizerisch-deutschen Sprache zur Reformationszeit dar. Das ungewohnte Schriftbild macht diese Zürcher Bibel in der originalen Ausgabe jedoch schwer lesbar. Niklaus Ulrich hat sie deshalb in langjähriger Arbeit vollständig transkribiert. Im Rahmen des 500-Jahre-Jubiläums gibt nun die Kirchgemeinde Grossmünster in Zürich unter der Projektleitung von Martin Rüsch das Neue Testament und die Psalmen in dieser transkribierten Fassung heraus. Zum ersten Mal sind damit durch Zwingli aus dem Urtext ins Deutsche übertragene Texte als normale Buchausgabe erhältlich. Um der einstigen, schweizerdeutsch anmutenden Sprache besser folgen zu können, ist der Text von 2007 synoptisch daneben gesetzt. Somit liegt zum Amtsantritt Zwinglis am Grossmünster vor 500 Jahren ein reformations-, kultur- und sprachgeschichtliches Schlüsseldokument jener Zeit vor.

Following Zwingli explores history, scholarship, and memory in Reformation Zurich. The humanist culture of this city was shaped by a remarkable sodality of scholars, many of whom had been associated with Erasmus. In creating a new Christian order, Zwingli and his colleagues sought biblical, historical, literary, and political models to shape and defend their radical reforms. After Zwingli’s sudden death, the next generation was committed to the institutional and intellectual establishment of the Reformation through ongoing dialogue with the past. The essays of this volume examine the immediacy of antiquity, early Christianity, and the Middle Ages for the Zurich reformers. Their reading and appropriation of history was no mere rhetorical exercise or polemical defence. The Bible, theology, church institutions, pedagogy, and humanist scholarship were the lifeblood of the Reformation. But their appropriation depended on the interplay of past ideals with the pressing demands of a sixteenth-century reform movement troubled by internal dissention and constantly under attack.
