Wie lässt sich Widerstand historiographisch beobachten? Die vorliegende Arbeit wählt eine praxistheoretische Perspektive und einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, um die Dynamiken von Herrschaftspraxis und Widerstand am Beispiel des politischen Transformationszeitraums von 1902–1910 in der Kapkolonie aufzuzeigen. Die Autorin zeigt, wie radikalisierende administrative Ausgrenzungs- und Entrechtungsstrategien auf taktisches Handeln rassistisch marginalisierter Menschen trafen. Die Aktivist*innen werden in einem breiten Spektrum politischer Vorstellungen, Handlungsweisen und Taktiken verortet; ihr Kampf galt nicht nur den konkreten Praktiken der Ausgrenzung und Entrechtung, sondern auch den Bedeutungskategorien, die diese ermöglichten. Über Praktiken der Repräsentation und Mobilisierung wurde ein vielstimmiger Widerstand gegen das kolonialstaatliche System Weißer Vorherrschaft organisiert. Die Relevanz der Arbeit liegt nicht nur in der sehr eindringlichen Quellenarbeit zu einer bislang wenig beachteten, aber folgenreichen Epoche der südafrikanischen Geschichte, sondern auch in der methodischen Konzeptionierung, die von soziologischen, literatur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Zugängen bereichert wird.
