Since 1989, it has been possible to review what has been published both at home & abroad on the communist states of Central & Eastern Europe &, no less importantly, on the Soviet Union itself, from a new perspective. Few have chosen to engage in this Herculean task, whether out of a residual civility in not wishing to mock certain aging scholarss whose research would appear curiously dated, or out of a sense of fatigue with the whole subject of casting aspersions on mistaken views. A New Europe for the Old? asks whether the master narratives that circulated so widely in the West in the half century since 1945 remain valid. The editor's volume raises pertinent questions regarding the current state of the European world as it has evolved since 1989. He includes contributions from important scholars around the world. A New Europe for the Old? provides greater sympathy for the complexity of societies, & argues for greater tolerance of those that are small, & that do not cast a long shadow in the world today. In the twenty-first as in the twentieth century, they may be engines of change, both as a result of the disorder that they produce as well as the ways in which their values, however seemingly antiquated, survive & prosper, & not only in their native lands. This volume will intrigue historians & European studies scholars alike.

The Archipelago written by John Foot and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-17 with History categories.

'An enjoyable, highly readable history that manages to bring murky, often fiendishly complex events into the light' Sunday Times Italy emerged from the Second World War in ruins. Divided, invaded and economically broken, it was a nation that some people claimed had ceased to exist. And yet, as rural society disappeared almost overnight, by the 1960s, it could boast the fastest-growing economy in the world. In The Archipelago, historian John Foot chronicles Italy's tumultuous history from the post-war period to the present day. From the silent assimilation of fascists into society after 1945 to the artistic peak of neorealist cinema, he examines both the corrupt and celebrated sides of the country. While often portrayed as a failed state on the margins of Europe, Italy has instead been at the centre of innovation and change – a political laboratory. This new history tells the fascinating story of a country always marked by scandal but with the constant ability to re-invent itself. Comprising original research and lively insights, The Archipelago chronicles the crises and modernisations of more than seventy years of post-war Italy, from its fields, factories, squares and housing estates to Rome's political intrigue.

Political Economy Of Contemporary Italy written by Nicolò Giangrande and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-16 with Business & Economics categories.

Drawing on Kaleckian and Kaldorian approaches, Political Economy of Contemporary Italy: The Economic Crisis and State Intervention explores the reasons behind the stagnation of the Italian economy from the 1970s and suggests policy solutions to ease the crisis. The central thesis of the book is that from the early 1990s Italy experienced a constant reduction of both private and public investment which, combined with increasing labour precariousness and wage moderation, contributed to the decline of both labour productivity and economic growth. It is argued that lack of industrial policies amplified the problem of the poor macroeconomic performance, since Italian firms – small-sized and non-innovating – were incapable of staying competitive on the global scene. Net exports did not compensate for the decline of public spending, private investment and consumption. It is also shown that, in these respects, Italy presents an interesting case study with wider ramifications for it was involved in the global process of intensifying the neoliberal agenda but at a faster rate than other OECD countries. The book concludes with a call for an alternative economic policy in order to promote innovation, reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth. This book marks a significant contribution to the literature on the recent history of the European economy, Italian studies and the history of economic thought.

We The Divided written by Remo Bodei and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Political Science categories.

Cultural Writing. Political Science. Translated from the Italian by Jeremy Parzen Aaron Thomas. In this history of Italian culture and philosophy from the founding of the Italian Republic to the present day, philosopher Remo Bodei examines Italian society in one of the most exhilarating and intriguing periods of its history. Following World War II and the defeat of Fascism, the reconstruction of the country and onset of the Cold War brought new challenges to Italy. The Italian people--whose sense of national identity has always been precarious--were divided between the competing political passions and ideologies of Catholicism and Communism, and compelled to negotiate these differences against the backdrop of both American cultural and economic hegemony and the utopian enticements of a more equitable society purportedly represented by the Soviet Union. Alternating between imaginative historical research and sharp theoretical analysis, Bodei reconstructs this process of cultural negotiation, showing how the ethos of the Italian people was parsed in specific spheres, such as the family, the military, political parties, religion, the judiciary, and organized crime. He examines both the ways in which philosophers have sought to make sense of the ethical and political problems the Italian people have had to confront, as well as the decisions effectively taken by individuals and groups. Bodei concludes with some reflections upon the difficulties and challenges that Italy faces in an increasingly interdependent world.

Dante S Plurilingualism written by Sara Fortuna and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Dante's conception of language is encompassed in all his works and can be understood in terms of a strenuous defence of the volgare in tension with the prestige of Latin. By bringing together different approaches, from literary studies to philosophy and history, from aesthetics to queer studies, from psychoanalysis to linguistics, this volume offers new critical insights on the question of Dantes language, engaging with both the philosophical works characterized by an original project of vulgarization, and the poetic works, which perform a new language in an innovative and self-reflexive way. In particular, Dantes Plurilingualism explores the rich and complex way in which Dantes linguistic theory and praxis both informs and reflects an original configuration of the relationship between authority, knowledge and identity that continues to be fascinated by an ideal of unity but is also imbued with a strong element of subjectivity and opens up towards multiplicity and modernity.
