Morphology Of Wood Pulp Fiber From Softwoods And Influence On Paper Strength written by Richard A. Horn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1974 with Fibers categories.

To achieve full utilization of each harvested tree, interest centers on use of all of the tree components. The objective of the study is to determine the influence of the morphological characteristics of pulp fiber from 12 western U.S. softwood species, representative of a wide range of fiber. The effect of the morphology of the wood pulp fiber as distinguished from that of the wood fiber is emphasized because differences in performance of fiber-based products are traced to the pulp fiber. Interrelationships of fiber morphology and pulp sheet properties are discussed. The results indicate that it is not possible to fully characterize the performance of a pulp by a single morphological characteristic and that the morphological characteristics significantly influence strength properties of sheets.

Humanity's ability to produce enough food is mostly due to adoption of new methods and technologies by the agricultural industries as they became available. New information, communication and high speed processing and precision agriculture technologies have the potential to transform the agricultural industry. These technologies incorporate radio-frequency and microwave radiation into their systems. This book presents an overview of how these technologies are being used in agricultural systems. The main purpose of the book is to provide a glimpse of what is possible and encourage practitioners in the engineering and agricultural industries to explore how radio-frequency and microwave systems might further enhance the agricultural industry. The authors have extensive experience in agricultural and microwave engineering, instrumentation and communication systems.

Already in the mind- 1980s, disturbances in print quality began to be observed which were associated with surface structure changes primarily in the image areas. The defect was most observable in printing by the heat-set web-offset technology (HSWO) on high-gloss papers. In this printing technique, some of the the internal stresses in the structure were released with a surface roughening and fibre rising as a consequence. Changes in the surface structure were visible to the naked eye but there was no laboratory method available which could provide information about the size ans nature of these changes. A research project was begun at STFI to study the response of the paper surface to dampening and drying, the two special characteristics of the heat-set process. The aim of the work was first to develop a new method and then to investigate how different structures develop when the paper is treated with water and heat. Since changes in the surface are often associated with the phenomenon that fibres rise from the surface plane, this method waw called the fibre rising method. At first, the method was very time-consuming, and gave only a moderate precision. The first investigations were carried out discontinuously and the whole measurement procedure took more than an hour. Over the years, the technology and the apparatus have been improved so that a measurement now takes only a minute with much better precision than was previously possible. The finished apparatus is available on the market under the name FIBRO 1000 and, there are now believed to be more than 50 apparatuses in use around the world. The apparatus consists of three surface treatment units and an image analysis station. The measurement is carried out without interruption in a cycle consisting od dampening, drying, bending of the sample around a slender rod, and image analysis. Each station can be adjusted individually, and the apparatus is therefore now used for many more applications than was at first envisaged. This licentiate dissertation includes four articles. The first article describes the measurement method and the deterioration in print quality which can be related to roughening and fibre rising. The study was made on uncoated wood-containing offset papers. The applications of the fibre rising method are dealt with in the other articles. In the second study, the linting in offset printing of wood-containing papers has been investigated. The results of test printings on a laboratory scale and the results of laboratory tests have been compared. The third study discusses how chemical additives in the stock influence the fibre rising tendency of uncoated magazine papers. In the fourth article, the relationship between fibre rising and linting has been investigated. In this paper the merits of the Linting Propensity Index (LPI) have been tested. From the data obtained, the correlation between lint collected in a four-colour web-offset press asn fibre rising data obtaining using the FIBRO 1000 apparatus has benne calculated.
